What day was mothers day 2014

It is hard to miss Mother's Day when the card shops change their displays to a wash of pink and flowers as soon as Valentine's Day has been and gone.

But for those of you who have managed to avoid the constant adverts on what gift to get your mum this Mother's Day, here's our guide to when it is and why we celebrate it.

When is Mother's Day?

Mother's Day - also known as Mothering Sunday - is a national celebration giving sons and daughters the opportunity to show their gratitude to their mums.

Mother's Day is held on Laetare Sunday - the fourth Sunday of Lent - and is always three weeks before Easter Sunday.

The date can change depending on the date Easter falls on, meaning it can be March 1 at the earliest and April 4 at the latest.

In 2014, Mother's Day takes place this Sunday (March 30).

What is Mother's Day?

Historians believe Mothering Sunday has evolved from the 16th century Christian practice of returning to the childhood church. Families came together for reunions in the towns and villages where they grew up and it became customary for those working as servants to be given the day off in order to visit their mothers. They often took gifts from their employers to their mothers which then led to the modern day event in which children give gifts to their mums.

Mother's Day today

Mother's Day became much more commercialised once the United States of America recognised it as an official occasion, although they celebrate it on the second Sunday of May. The event is now celebrated in dozens of countries around the world on different dates throughout the year.

MOTHER'S DAY, 2014

- - - - - - -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

For over a century, Americans have come together to celebrate our first friends and mentors, our inspirations and constant sources of strength. Our mothers are breadwinners, community leaders, and pillars of family. They pioneer scientific discoveries, serve with valor in our Armed Forces, and represent our Nation in the loftiest halls of Government. Whether biological, adoptive, or foster, they play a singular role in our lives. Because they so often put everything above themselves, on Mother's Day, we put our moms first.

Through centuries of organizing, marching, and making their voices heard, mothers have won greater opportunities than ever before for themselves and their children. Their victories brought our Nation closer to realizing a sacred founding principle -- that we are all created equal and each of us deserves the chance to pursue our own version of happiness.

Today, there are more battles to win. Working mothers increasingly provide the majority of their family's income, yet even now, discrimination prevents women from earning a living equal to their efforts. My Administration is proud to fight alongside women as they push to close the gender pay gap, shatter glass ceilings, and implement workplace policies that do not force any parent to choose between their jobs and their kids. Because when women succeed, America succeeds.

By words and example, mothers teach us how to grow and who to become. They shape lasting habits that can lead to healthy living and lifelong learning. They demonstrate what is possible when we work hard and apply our talents. Without complaint, they give their best every day so they and their children might achieve the scope of their dreams. Today, let us once again extend our gratitude for our mothers' unconditional love and support -- during years past and in the years to come.

The Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 8, 1914 (38 Stat. 770), has designated the second Sunday in May each year as "Mother's Day" and requested the President to call for its appropriate observance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 11, 2014, as Mother's Day. I urge all Americans to express love and gratitude to mothers everywhere, and I call upon all citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this  ninth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.

BARACK OBAMA

No matter where you are in the world, there is a day to celebrate mom. While it might not be on the same day around the world, there is a universal appreciation for mothers everywhere. But in America, it was only in 1914 that Mother's Day was recognized as a national holiday. After the death of Ann Reeves Jarvis (the woman who began "Mothers' Day Work Clubs" to teach local women how to properly care for their children) in 1908, her daughter Anna Jarvis sought out host a celebration to thank mothers everywhere for all they do. She held the first Mother's Day celebration in a Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia with financial backing from Philadelphia retail owner John Wanamaker. Thousands also congregated in Philadelphia at Wanamaker's retail store for a Mother's Day celebration of their own.

After Jarvis successfully held her first Mother's Day, she sought out to make it a national celebration. After years of lobbying, she finally got the attention of President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. He proclaimed that the second Sunday in May, no matter what the date, would belong to moms across the nation. Hence, this is why Mother's Day changes every year. This year Mother's Day falls on:
