My friend Bruno always comes up with great ideas to gift me for my birthday! This year he gifted me a candle making class which I knew I would enjoy but could not have imagined how much I would love the experience. If you like making things and like candles this is truly a great class to consider. This particular candle making class in Los Angeles is hosted by Banter and Bliss at Crafted in San Pedro.

Crafted at the Port of LA

What is Crafted? It is a marketplace dedicated to handmade products. Almost every single one of the vendors offers a class which I think is something that makes this place stand out. It is in an area where there is a brewery right across the way and is close by to attractions like the Iowa Battleship, the Warner Theatre and the Korean Bell of Friendship. While it is a bit of a drive if you’re coming from DTLA there is enough to do that you can make it more than worth your time to visit.

Banter and Bliss Candle Making Class in Los Angeles

Our candle class took place at 6 pm on a Saturday. To start we had the chance to pick out the scents we would like to use. There were about forty scents to choose from and you can mix up to four to create the smell that you would like. I was immediately drawn to tropical paradise and birthday cake. Unfortunately, those are two scents that would not go well together so I decided to just do birthday cake. Which felt fitting since this was to celebrate my birthday.

Once you have your scent or scents picked out it was time to pour it into the cup. The teacher explains how much to put in and gives you enough information about how the entire process works that I now feel like I could make my own candles at home! Next, we got to pick out the color that wanted our candle to be. I chose pink and was confused when the chip I was handed looked purple. Once it melted it turned pink and my candle had the best pink color of any of the others. Everyone else who chose pink got a lighter shade and I think it’s because of the different scents and how that impacts the color.

After the color started to melt we added the hot wax and began stirring. Eventually, we poured it into the candle jar and then had about 30-40 minutes to walk around while our candles cooled. Not only do you get to pick the scent of your candle but you get to name it as well. Since I had a big birthday this year, turning 30, I decided to name my candle thirty, flirty and thriving as a nod to 13 Going on 30!

When we came back to pick up our candle around 8:00 pm I was thrilled with how mine turned out. The pink was so nice and vibrant! My scent was really strong on the first day but has since mellowed out to where it is really enjoyable. I have used my candle a few times so far and I am so happy with it. This was such a special activity and I highly recommend it. Be sure to keep an eye out on Groupon for a deal on this class.

This is a really fun idea of what to do to celebrate your birthday. If you are looking for other birthday ideas in LA click here.
