How long does facebook lock you out for wrong password

Hi all,

I’m hoping someone can help as I’m at my wits end. I was trying to organise some boosting of posts on Instagram this afternoon and added the business debit card needed to pay the bill via the Instagram app on my phone (I had to enter the details twice for it to recognise the card). In order to upload the card, I had to enter my personal FB password (I’m an admin for the FB Business Page in question via my personal FB page) but of course I couldn’t remember the password so I changed it successfully.

I got the email saying my password had been changed successfully but then then another email right away saying I needed to ‘secure’ my personal FB account due to potential suspicious activity - even though there was nothing suspicious really and I had changed the password myself. I clicked the email to secure the account and straight away it tells me the account is locked.

Because the account is locked, it won’t let me access the FB support portal, upload photo ID for proof, do anything. I’ve reset the password a few times successfully which should have ‘secured’ the account but still I get taken to my main page which remains locked, even with 3x new passwords! It’s like a glitch where it’s stuck and just reverts to my locked account no matter what I do.

Can anyone help? Does it take 24 hours for the account to actually unlock once you’ve set a new password? I desperately need access to my account for work (so many FB Business pages etc tied to it - I work in media) and don’t know what to do next - any and all help would be so appreciated as I’m fully panicking!

If you attempt to log into your account with the incorrect password more than 5 times, the system will automatically lock you out as a safety precaution.

We will send an email directly to your login email address with a link to unlock your account:

By clicking on the link in that email, you can unlock your account.

If you do not receive the email or don’t have access to the login email address, the lock will expire in approximately one hour.

Keep in mind that if you’ve updated your password recently, there’s a chance that your browser settings are saving your outdated password automatically. In this case, you should clear your cache in order to clear the saved, outdated password.

Facebook attempts to keep on top of scams and community standards violations, so if your account has been locked for security reasons, something about your account or activity has caught the attention of Facebook staff or its automated systems. While your account can be temporarily locked for a variety of reasons, there are only a few common ones.

Questionable Identity

  1. Facebook requires its users to provide a full and correct name to use its service, so while calling yourself by an alias in an attempt to either maintain your privacy or be amusing may seem harmless, it's a quick way to get your account locked. Other similar causes include using a photograph of a celebrity, entering an obviously incorrect birth date or creating an account for a fictitious person or company.

Phishing and Spam

  1. Offering your products or services on a Facebook page is perfectly okay, after all social media is all about connecting with others and helping people get what they need. You can't, however, use your personal Timeline for this purpose and frequently sending out mass messages or posting repeatedly on other Timelines is considered spam. Either can result in your account being locked. Any attempts at asking for passwords or other login information, no matter how innocuous -- such as publicly asking a colleague for a forgotten password -- can be taken as a phishing attempt, and could result in an account lock.

Security

  1. Facebook takes the security of its users' accounts very seriously, and if it suspects that an account has been compromised, Facebook locks the account down until it can confirm the account is secure. A sudden increase in posting frequency, link sharing or messaging are just a few things that can appear suspicious, especially when an account is generally passive.

How to Restore Your Account

  1. If Facebook feels your account has been compromised or is unsure of your identity, as a representative of your business you may be asked to provide a color image of a government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driver's license. It should clearly show your name, picture and birthday. You are free to cover or otherwise obscure any data not required to verify your identity like your address or license number. In less extreme situations, you may simply have to provide answers to the security questions you established when creating your account.

How long does Facebook temporarily locked last?

After you complete a security check, you'll have to wait 24 hours to log into your Facebook account. During this time, your account will still be visible to your friends on Facebook, but you won't be able to access it.

How many times can you try to log into Facebook before it locks you out?

If you attempt to log into your account with the incorrect password more than 5 times, the system will automatically lock you out as a safety precaution. We will send an email directly to your login email address with a link to unlock your account: By clicking on the link in that email, you can unlock your account.

How do I get back my locked FB account?

You may be able to get back into your Facebook account by using an alternate email or mobile phone number listed on your account. Using a computer or mobile phone that you have previously used to log into your Facebook account, go to facebook.com/login/identify and follow the instructions.
