Recommended Posts I noticed some slight vibration in the drivetrain of my 2007 AWD Edge. Upon closer inspection it looks like the both center driveshaft bearings need replacement - I can see daylight around the black rubber (see the attached picture) and I can wiggle them around with my hand. I assume this isn't normal. Can these bearings be replaced without replacing the entire driveshaft? You can see the two bearings in this fancy drivetrain image: http://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/crop/200704/2007-ford-edge-17_600x0w.jpg Edited February 25, 2016 by DunePearlEdge Share this postLink to postShare on other sites

Thanks WWWPerfA_ZN0W I contacted him and will look locally. Would a Jiffy Lube sell a part like this direct to me? For the time being, is there any harm in removing the center shaft completely and operating the car in FWD? Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
Jiffy Lube??? Umm ... no. If looking for just the bearings, you will have to make your Edge the guinea pig. Measure the OEM part & find equivalents at, say, NAPA. For a new driveshaft, best to go to a Ford dealer like AutoNation (should be one close to you). Used driveshafts (unknown quality) are available via EBay vendors, should be available at large junkyards like LKQ. Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
Thanks again. I'm going to order the 2 piece/single bearing driveshaft for the 2008+ models from Benny. In the mean time I will remove the shaft so I can operate the car vibration free until the new shaft arrives. Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
I think you will also have to pull the fuse for the AWD system if you remove the driveshaft so the PCM doesn't crap out on you. Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
Thanks again WWWP, removing the AWD fuse has eliminated the vibration. Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
Is there a central point under the back of the car, maybe the tow hitch or differential, where I can jack the back of the car up to get both back wheels off the ground? I'll need to spin the wheels to align the driveshaft bolt holes. Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
Not sure on the rear. The usual jack/lift points are just forward of the rear wheels. Front wheels chock-blocked of course.

use jack stands also with the hydraulic jack as back up. No need to die under your Edge.

Did your edge have the 3 piece drive shaft? And was it just a simple swap to use the 2 piece drive shaft in its place? I am currently having the same issue on my 2008 Edge and don't want to have to spend almost double for the 3 piece drive shaft. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Thanks, I did read that also. Just want to make sure from someone who has had experience with it before ordering the part. I'm fixing it for my mother and have zero experience with the Edge. I know it's been done on the MKX which is basically the same vehicle. Just want some. Confirmation before pulling the trigger. Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
Another reason to NOT OWN..AWD. Nothing but a pain in the a.. Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
Gentlemen, I have found the bearing: https://febestparts.com/DRIVE_SHAFT_BEARING/MZCB-CX9R I was searching endlessly for a bearing on my MXK (lincoln version of the Edge) and found this. Ill update once i receive it...i know i'm late to the party but 52 bucks is worth a shot compared to 4-600 for a new shaft Edited July 31, 2019 by Teedles Share this postLink to postShare on other sites
Can anyone confirm if these bearings work on the 2 piece shaft with 1 hanger? I am a mechanic and can change a hanger no issue, hate to spend the $ on a whole shaft Share this postLink to postShare on other sitesCreate an account or sign in to commentYou need to be a member in order to leave a comment Sign inAlready have an account? What does it sound like when a carrier bearing is going out?The first sign of a bad carrier bearing is the howling noise it makes. It sounds similar to loud tire noise. It should be apparent to anybody riding in the cab because the drive shaft and carrier bearing run just under the thin floorboards. You may hear the howling only at certain speeds too.
How much does it cost to replace a drive shaft center support bearing? The average replacement cost for your driveshaft centre bearing starts at just $200 but can range up to $1055 or more, depending on the make and model you drive.
