  • Water Accumulating in Side Freezer Compartment Bottom of Whirlpool WRS325FDAM02 Refrigerator

Refrigerators tend to have more design similarities than differences. All employ refrigeration coils to cool the air in the freezer and refrigerator compartments, and these coils sometimes freeze over. Most refrigerators have a defrost mechanism that comes on cyclically to melt the ice, and the models that have this defrost feature need a drain feature to collect water, so it doesn’t leak on the floor.

The location of the drain collection tube varies with manufacturer. You can usually find it by looking inside the freezer compartment, but on some models, you can only access it from behind after removing an access panel. If you can’t find the drain location, check your owner’s manual. Don’t worry if you lost the manual that came with the refrigerator. As long as you know the model number, you can always find one online, either at the manufacturer’s site or an appliance repair site.

Locating the drain is the hard part. Cleaning the drain itself is easy, although you’ll probably have to take stuff out of the freezer and run the defrost cycle.

GE Refrigerator Drain Tube Location

The drain opening on a GE side-by-side refrigerator/freezer is actually on the back wall of the freezer compartment, but the way you access it depends on the model. You may have to unscrew a panel from the interior back wall of the freezer, or you may have to remove a panel from the back of the appliance. If you have to work behind the refrigerator, be sure to unplug it first.

Kenmore Refrigerator Defrost Drain Location

You generally can find the drain hole inside the freezer compartment of Kenmore refrigerators. If you don’t see one when you open the door, it may be under a floor panel, which may be frozen in place. Remove the items from the floor of the refrigerator, and pry up the panel with a flat-head screwdriver to uncover the drain opening.

Frigidaire Drain Location

On Frigidaire models, the drain opening is more likely to be directly under the evaporative coils, and you have to access it from the back of the appliance. Don’t forget to unplug the refrigerator; then unscrew and remove the back panel to reveal the coils. The drain may be hard to see, especially if the coils are frozen over, but it’s there.

Whirlpool Drain Location

If your Whirlpool refrigerator drain tube is clogged, you’ll probably have to access it from behind the appliance. Don’t be daunted by the jumble of tubes and wires you’ll see when you remove the evaporator coil panel. It’s right there under the evaporator coil.

What to Do When You Find the Drain Opening

When the drain tube clogs, water spills over the rim of the drain pan and falls on the floor and puddles there. This is something you need to correct as soon as possible, because it doesn’t take long for the water to rot the floor and promote mold.

The problem is usually ice buildup, so the first thing to do is to raise the temperature by unplugging the refrigerator and waiting overnight. You could run the defrost cycle, but if the coils are frozen, it probably isn’t working as it should. To hurry things along, get a bucket of hot water and a turkey baster and squirt water into the drain tube or use a heat gun or hair dryer.

Once the ice melts, appliance pros recommend disinfecting and deodorizing the drain tube. You can use the turkey baster for this. Fill a container with 2 cups of hot water and 1 teaspoon of baking soda and squirt the solution into the drain hose until you hear the water running into the drain pan. To prevent future clogs, repeat this treatment every year or so.

Why is my Whirlpool refrigerator leaking water from the freezer?

A refrigerator's water inlet valve opens and closes, allowing water from your home's water line to supply the dispenser and ice maker. Cracks or damage to the valve or its metal fitting can cause leaks at the valve site. When this happens, you typically notice your Whirlpool refrigerator leaking water from the back.

Where is the defrost drain in my Whirlpool freezer?

Inside your refrigerator and freezer compartments, typically near the back wall, is a small indentation. This is the defrost drain, which takes water and ice that accumulates on the walls of the refrigerator and freezer and drains it down to the drain pan on the bottom of the unit.

Why is water coming out from under my freezer?

When food particles or other debris clog the drain hose, ice forms, and eventually, water leaks from the freezer and refrigerator. The defrost drain tube and drain hole are usually found within the freezer at the bottom back.

Why is my side

If water appears on the floor in front of the refrigerator once or twice a day, it could be due to a clog in the defrost drain tube. The usual evidence of a clogged drain in a side-by-side refrigerator is ice under the bottom basket in the freezer compartment in addition to a puddle of water on the floor.
