K-BroVet Potassium Bromide Oral Solution is a veterinarian prescribed medication for dogs that contains Potassium Bromide. It is intended to aid in the management of dogs experiencing epileptic seizures. K-BroVet is available in an Oral Solution that is butterscotch vanilla flavor and 250 mg/ml in 2 oz or 10 oz bottles. While this is a veterinarian prescribed medication, is is not approved by the FDA. 

K-BROVET potassium bromide is used to treat seizure disorders in dogs. It can be used in addition to therapy with other agents or as the sole anticonvulsant.

This medication is only intended for use in dogs.

K-BroVet is made of potassium bromide, and:

  • Help dogs experiencing seizures
  • Comes in liquid form, butterscotch vanilla flavored
  • Also contains B6 and B12 vitamins in oral solution

K-BROVET Oral Solution is a butterscotch vanilla flavored solution containing 250 mg/mL of potassium bromide, cyanocobalamin and pyridoxine HCl.

Side effects of K-BROVET include:

  • Drowsiness (will subside after 3 weeks)
  • Uncoordinated movements
  • Increased urination

  • Increased hunger

  • Constipation
  • Nausea with increased dosage
  • Personality changes: aimless pacing, aggression/irritability, attention seeking

Pancreatitis is not linked to this medication alone, but has been shown in dogs also taking concurrent doses of bromide and phenobarbital.

Older dogs are more likely to experience adverse effects; use with caution. Do not administer this medication to cats.

Use as directed by your Veterinarian. 

For a loading dose to achieve a serum level of approximately 1 mg/mL, give 120 mg/kg PO daily for 5 days and then reduce to 30 mg/kg PO once daily. To achieve a serum level of approximately 1.5 mg/mL, give 160 mg/kg PO for 5 days and then reduce to 40 mg/kg PO once daily thereafter.

Is potassium bromide harmful to humans?

Potassium bromide is not acutely toxic and it poses a low toxicity hazard. Its oral toxicity is well known and is very low. A high dose will cause only nausea and vomiting. Similarly, its dermal toxicity is low, and it is not a skin irritant.

Is potassium bromide used in humans?

In human medicine potassium bromide is used as an adjunct to phenobarbital in the treatment of epilepsy. In the past, it was used in humans as a sedative and anti-convulsant at doses of up to 6 g/person/day (expressed as bromide).
