What gas does audi take

In its 5th Generation, the Audi A4 has proven itself a worthy competitor to the likes of the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes C-Class. It is hard to deny the executive stance and the luxury prowess of the A4 sedan. We are here to look at all the fuel-related topics for the Audi A4 so let’s dive right in.

All generations of Audi A4 manufactured from 2004 onwards take regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87. However, Audi recommends the use of premium gasoline with an octane rating of 91 for optimum performance.

The Audi A4 is a premium luxury sedan, and we would take a step forward to suggest that one should always use higher octane grades than the ones recommended by the manufacturer. In the Audi A4’s case, we recommend going above 89 on the octane rating to get better performance and enhanced engine health.

Fuel Requirements Based On Engine Type

2016 – Present

The Audi A4’s current generation is offered with two engines, both with 2.0-liter displacement. One of them is a higher output engine producing 261 horsepower than the 201 horsepower of the lower power variant. Both are gasoline engines, and as per the Audi A4’s user manual, a minimum of 87-grade octane fuel type is what Audi suggests.

As we are aware that 87 is a minimum octane grade recommended, we suggest going higher on the octane rating. Not only will this enhance the engine performance, but it will also significantly improve engine health.

Engine Fuel Requirement
2.0-liter inline-four (201 HP) 87-grade octane minimum
2.0-liter inline-four (261 HP) 87-grade octane minimum

2008 – 2016

The Audi A4’s 4th Generation, also known as B8, brought along a 2.0-liter inline-four — along with a 3.1-liter and a 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine. This generation assisted Audi in developing its place in its segment as a serious competitor. It was suggested by Audi to use a minimum octane rating of 87 for fuel to be used on both engines.

Higher octane grades like 89 or above are what we would suggest. From experience, we know that higher grade octanes result in better engine performance and health. Also, the grave knocking issues associated with lower octane grade fuels can be easily addressed using a higher octane grade fuel type.

Engine Fuel Requirement
3.2-liter Six-Cylinder Engine 87-grade octane minimum
3.1-liter Six-Cylinder Engine 87-grade octane minimum
2.0-liter Inline Four-Cylinder Engine 87-grade octane minimum

2004 – 2008

The Audi A4’s 3rd Generation was known as B7. The B7 Audi A4 was offered with two four-cylinder engines displacing 1.8 and 2.0-liters. The 6-cylinder engines were offered with 3.0 and 3.1-liter displacements. All of these were gasoline engines and became pretty popular among buyers.

The owner’s manual for the B7 Audi A4 does not suggest an octane grade. However, various forums online suggest a minimum of 91 octane grade for fuel. We would like to iterate here that this was mainly because the people on these forums posted real-life experiences.

We also strongly suggest 89 AKI or above. This trick has always worked out for better performance and better engine life.

Engine Fuel Requirement
3.1-liter Six-Cylinder Engine 91-grade octane minimum
3.0-liter Six-Cylinder Engine 91-grade octane minimum
2.0-liter Inline Four-Cylinder Engine 91-grade octane minimum
1.8-liter Inline Four-Cylinder Engine 91-grade octane minimum

2000 – 2004

The B6 Audi A4 2nd Generation comes with three engine displacements. A 1.8-liter Inline four-cylinder engine, a 2.8-liter six-cylinder and a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. These engines were all gasoline as no diesel engines were offered.

The owner’s manuals for the B6 Audi A4, which is the 2nd generation of A4, suggest a minimum of 87 Octane. However, we feel that 89 AKI or above should be the minimum standard here.

Engine Fuel Requirement
3.0-liter Six-Cylinder Engine 87-grade octane minimum
2.8-liter Six-Cylinder Engine 87-grade octane minimum
1.8-liter Inline Four-Cylinder Engine 87-grade octane minimum

1994 – 2000

The first generation of Audi A4 came with two engine displacements. There was a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine and a 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine. Both of them are of the gasoline type.

Although we have not been able to locate these models’ user manuals, looking at the other variants that suggest fuel types, we can conclude that the minimum octane rating for the 1st generation of A4 will also be 87.

What Types Of Gasoline Can And Can’t Be Used?

In today’s world, many different types of gasoline are available to choose from. It means more profound knowledge of what to use and avoid is required. Let’s look at them one by one and educate ourselves more.

Reformulated Gasoline

Reformulated gasoline is a particular fuel type that is greener and cleaner in combustion. It is readily available at various gas stations, and many car owners use RFG. It is mainly a result of environmental focus, and engineers came up with RFG to protect the environment.

Audi A4’s owner manuals don’t state anything on this front. Audi has instead stayed silent as to whether it is advisable to use RFG.

Gasoline/Oxygenated Blends Or E-85

Ethanol-based fuels are nothing new. These are used in high-performance engines by horsepower enthusiasts. The E85 denotes a blend of 85% ethanol with 15% regular gasoline. It is usually used for high-output engines.

Audi takes a precautionary approach in suggesting the use of Ethanol blended fuels. They want car owners to keep two things in check while opting for ethanol-blended fuels.

  • A minimum octane grade of 87 should be used
  • No more than 15% of ethanol should be blended with gasoline

Now, it doesn’t stop here. One has to make sure that the vehicle is ethanol fuel compatible. Car manufacturers use different markings and indications to let car owners know whether their cars are ethanol fuel compatible. It is sometimes just a “Flexfuel” badge, and on others, it is mentioned on the fuel cap.

Either of these means your vehicle is ethanol compatible, and you may use ethanol-blended fuels in your car.

What gas does audi take

It comes with a caveat. There are some symptoms associated with ethanol-blended fuels that one needs to remember. Additionally, there are some precautions one must take to use ethanol-blended fuels.

Precautions:

  • At least 11 liters of fuel must be added at the time of fill-up
  • The engine should not be switched off for at least 7 miles

Symptoms:

  • Rough idling and hard starts are common symptoms.
  • Ethanol fuel usage results in residue build-up inside the engine

Gasoline With Added Materials

Several additives are used with gasoline today. Some of these act as engine-cleaning agents and others act as detergents. Many car owners use these to ensure the vehicle’s engine health, and Audi suggests using only TOP Tier detergent gas for the Audi A4.

Gasoline With MMT or MTBE

MMT is the abbreviation for Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl. It was sold as a supplement when it was introduced. Later on, it was marketed and sold as an octane enhancer. Although Audi doesn’t suggest using MMT, MTBE, which is also an octane enhancer, may be used.

MTBE or methyl tertiary butyl ether is also referred to as an oxygenate. It assists with emissions reduction and improving fuel economy. Audi suggests the below for using MTBE:

  • The minimum octane rating must be 87 AKI or higher
  • The blend must not exceed 15% MTBE

What If I Hear A Knocking Noise From The Engine After Refilling?

The knocking from the engine is a common issue related to the usage of lower octane grade fuels. Most manufacturers, Audi included, suggest a minimum of 87-grade octane for their engines. However, this can and does result in knocking sounds from the engine and are a clear sign of low octane grade fuel.

To address this, simply use higher octane grades. We suggest 89 or above since this will immediately fix the knocking issues. If you are using higher-grade octane fuels, but the knocking still exists, it is time for a thorough vehicle checkup.

Can you use regular gas in an Audi?

Generally, most modern vehicles can safely run on regular gasoline. Unless your specific model recommends premium, many older Audi models will perform just as well on regular fuel as they will on premium.

What fuel do Audi recommend?

Audi vehicles are made to run on premium gasoline because of their direct-injection technology and turbocharged engines. Without using premium fuel, you can damage your Audi's engine and even cause severe damage if you don't fill up with regular gas when it's recommended.

What happens if you put 87 in an Audi?

In most cases, the vehicle will run fine, but you may experience less power and a decrease in gas mileage. In more serious cases, you may hear engine knocking or valve chatter because the fuel isn't burning right. These things could damage your engine and you should take it to your mechanic.

Can you put 87 gas in Audi A4?

It will work but it might cause damage to your engine. The engine has a low compression ratio because of the turbo and 87 octane will not burn as well.
