The George Washington University Internal Medicine Residency Program a.k.a. #GWIMRes is a unique program that offers unparalleled training experiences to help trainees reach their maximum potential as future clinicians, researchers, medical educators, advocates, and leaders in their field. Our mission is to create a diverse physician workforce dedicated to social justice, intellectual curiosity and process-improvement to advance the health of all.
Our programs include a categorical medicine program, a primary care program, and a preliminary internship program. Our curriculum is intentionally designed to develop trainees who are skilled in patient-centered, evidence-based medicine; patient safety and high value care; healthy equity; and medical education. Our incredible residents are diverse in experience and background which adds to the richness of the training experience and enhances the care for the communities we serve. Likewise, our approachable and supportive faculty are highly qualified medical educators, scholars, and leaders with expertise in various areas.

Internal medicine is a broad-based specialty encompassing the body’s major organ systems. The general internist is a physician who provides care in the office and the hospital, managing both common and complex problems in adolescents, adults and the elderly. Internists are expert diagnosticians who diagnose and treat a spectrum of acute and chronic illnesses, promote
health and help prevent disease. They are also trained in the essentials of primary care which involves an understanding of disease prevention, wellness, substance abuse, mental health and effective treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system and reproductive organs. These are minimum requirements. Some programs may have

Training Requirements
Training consists of a minimum of three years of postgraduate education in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency training program. There were 396 internal medicine residency training programs accredited by the ACGME for 2014/15 that offered 6,770 categorical positions.

Subspecialty/Fellowship TrainingSubspecialty/fellowship training following completion of an internal medicine residency training program is available in a wide range of fields. Certifiable subspecialties include: cardiology, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, gastroenterology, hematology, infectious diseases, medical oncology, nephrology, pulmonary disease and rheumatology. Added certificates of qualifications can be obtained in adolescent medicine, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, clinical and laboratory immunology, critical care medicine, geriatric medicine and sports medicine. The Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) in the Department of Internal Medicine at Washington University is committed to training physician scientists and preparing them for successful careers in academic medicine. The program focuses on the period from the completion of the combined MD-PhD degree through the clinical and post-doctoral research training years, culminating in a full-time academic appointment.
