Families will find so many fun things to do with your kids this weekend, October 7th – October 9th. Celebrate Archaeology Day at King Gillette Ranch, enjoy a performance of the Bob Baker Marionette Theater at Hollyhock House in Hollywood, celebrate Grand Park’s 10th Anniversary, participate in CicLAvia, and much more!

Spooky Science Discovery Cube Los Angeles11800 Foothill Blvd., Sylmar, CA 91342

Visit Discovery Cube Los Angeles now through Monday, October 31st for Spooky Science. “Stop by the science lab for fun and educational activities. Let your toddlers jump on the tractor rides. Take the Pumpkin Tetris Challenge.” Also, there will be a costume parade, trick-or-treat stations, and more. (Some activities are only offered on weekends.) All activities are included in general admission. Tickets are available online.

All Things Wicked & WonderfulSouth Coast Botanic Garden26300 Crenshaw Blvd., Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA 

Visit the South Coast Botanic Garden now through Wednesday, November 30th for All Things Wicked & Wonderful. “There’s something for everyone, and every scare level” including witch hunts, special classes, the Spider Pavilion, and more. “All Things Wicked & Wonderful will be sprinkled throughout the Garden and into our regular happenings as well, including classes.” All Things Wicked & Wonderful is included in general admission; however, some offerings may required an additional fee, such as the Spider Pavilion. Pumpkin Palooza FestivalDiscovery Cube Orange County2500 N. Main St., Santa Ana, CA 92705

Visit Discovery Cube Orange County for “Orange County’s first-ever Pumpkin Palooza Festival.” Kids can dress in their favorite costumes, have fun with Pumpkinology 101 activities, and participate in a dance party. Tickets are available now for Thursdays through Sundays throughout October. Details are available online.

Fall FestivalBrentwood Country Mart225 26th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90402

Brentwood Country Mart is hosting a Fall Festival on Friday, October 7th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Many events are ongoing and are happening throughout the day including gourd decorating for kids, a pumpkin patch, arts and crafts, and more. Details are available online. 

Your Author Series: Dr. Gloria Arjona – Virtual Event

Los Angeles Public Library System is hosting a virtual event, Your Author Series: Dr. Gloria Arjona, on Friday, October 7th at 4:00 pm. Dr. Arjona, an educator at California Institute of Technology, will “present from her latest middle grade book, The Story of Selena Quintanilla.” The event will be streaming live on LAPL’s YouTube channel. All those attending will have the opportunity to win a free book.

Free First FridaysKidspace Children’s Museum480 N. Arroyo Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91103

Families are invited to visit Kidspace Children’s Museum for free on Friday, October 7th from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The first Friday of each month, Kidspace opens it doors and gives families the chance to explore the museum with no admission fees. Advance reservations are required and are available online. 

Family Fridays: Movie Nights at The Huntington – EncantoThe Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, CA 91108

Enjoy an outdoor screening of Encanto at The Huntington on Friday, October 7th. This fun event also includes live musical entertainment and a hands-on children’s activity. Food is available for purchase or you can bring your own picnic. Doors open at 6:00 pm, and the movie starts at 7:15 pm. Advance tickets are required and are available online. (The movie is rated PG.)

El Capitan Theatre: Hocus Pocus6838 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028

From Friday, October 7th through Thursday, October 13th, families are invited to the El Capitan Theatre for special screenings of Hocus Pocus. “Enjoy specialty concession items, a prop display from the Walt Disney Archives, including the Spell Book, a statue and a broom. Take a picture at our ‘Hocus Pocus’ photo op.” Multiple showtimes are offered each day. Tickets are available online. (The movie is rated PG.)

Carved Descanso Gardens1418 Descanso Dr., La Cañada Flintridge, CA 

Carved returns to Descanso Gardens from Friday, October 7th through Monday, October 31st. Families will view hundreds of carved pumpkins lining the Camellia Forest. In addition, new activities and old favorites are planned such as  holiday-themed food and beverages, a hay maze, a pumpkin house, and more. “Guests can also enjoy UV ‘black light’ experiences, artists sculpting pumpkins, and a special Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) installation at the Amphitheater.” Tickets are available online and must be purchased in advance. 

Archaeology DayVisitor Center – King Gillette Ranch26876 Mulholland Hwy, Calabasas, CA 91302

October is California Archaeology Month, and you can celebrate Archaeology Day in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area on Saturday, October 8th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. This fun event will feature activities for family members of all ages. Performances are planned throughout the day as well as seeing genuine local artifacts on display, hands-on replica artifact tables, storytelling, the chance to dig up “artifacts”, and much more. This event and parking are free and open to the public.

LA: STEAM Career DayDiscovery Cube Los Angeles11800 Foothill Blvd., Sylmar, CA 91342

Mark your calendars. Visit Discovery Cube Los Angeles on Saturday, October 8th from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm for LA: STEAM Career Day, “a day of STEAM career exploration, featuring Q & A sessions with speakers from Carnegie Observatory and Discovery Cube.” Other special programming will also be offered for children ages 6-18. All activities are included in general admission. Tickets are available online.

Bob Baker Marionette Theater @ Hollyhock HouseHollyhock House Lawn4800 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90027

On Saturday, October 8th enjoy a matinee performance of the Bob Baker Marionette Theater happening at Hollyhock House. The marionette performance is scheduled from 10:00 am to 10:30 am and the family craft activity is from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. This is a free, ticketless community event. 

Cartoon Club: Bugs Bunny’s Halloween Parade New Beverly Cinema7165 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036

Enjoy an early morning screening of Bugs Bunny’s Halloween Parade on Saturday, October 8th at 10:00 am. “Our October cartoon spooktacular is a pre-Halloween treat for all the good ghouls and goblins who love everything that goes bump in the night.” Tickets are available online. 

Read & Play SaturdaysLakeshore LearningMultiple locations including2323 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90064

Lakeshore Learning is hosting Read & Play Saturdays on Saturday, October 8th (and each Saturday in October). This themed event is scheduled for 10 am to 3 pm, with story time every 30 minutes. Saturday’s theme is Undersea Odyssey. “After story time, immerse yourself in mermaid play, explore sea life, and more!” You can register online for this free event.

Star Wars Reads DaySilver Lake Branch Library2411 Glendale Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90039

Visit the Silver Lake Branch Library on Saturday, October 8th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm for Star Wars Reads Day. “Explore a galaxy far, far away with story times, crafts, giveaways, and a short show by the Saber Guild, a nonprofit Star Wars performance group.” Costumes are encouraged, and all ages are welcome to participate. 

Family ProgrammingAcademy Museum of Motion Pictures6067 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is hosting two special Family Programs on Saturday, October 8th. At 11:00 am, there is a matinee showing of Kubo and the Two Strings, “a stop-motion adventure influenced by Japanese art and culture.” Also at 11:00 am, families can check out Kid del Toro Book Signing and Family Workshop. “Join CHOGRIN, the author of Kid del Toro, for a reading and book signing followed by a family workshop creating mini monsters.” Tickets are available online. 

Saturday Explorer Series: The Good Boy24th Street Theatre1117 W. 24th St., Los Angeles, CA 90007

24th Street Theatre invites families to its Saturday Explorer Series happening on each Saturday in October at 2:00 pm. On the 8th, Michael Bonnabel will be performing The Good Boy. Each Saturday’s performance features a different production, each with an emphasis on storytelling. “Our hope is that families will watch this series together and then talk about the stories afterwards.” Tickets are available online. 

Indigenous Peoples’ Day Craft: Painted Clay Bowls Pt.1Pico Union Branch Library1030 S. Alvarado St., Los Angeles, CA 90006

Visit the Pico Union Branch Library on Saturday, October 8th at 2:00 pm. “In celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we will sculpt and paint clay bowls using Pueblo pottery techniques. During part 1, we will create the bowl. After a week’s drying time, we will sand and paint the finished piece.” 

Street Food Cinema: BeetlejuiceThe Autry Museum4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 

Street Food Cinema invites you to attend an outdoor screening of Beetlejuice on Saturday, October 8th. Doors open at 5:30 pm, the band begins performing at 6:45 pm, and the movie starts at 8:00 pm. Food trucks will be on-site as well. Tickets are available online. (Rated PG.)

Street Food Cinema: TwilightVeterans Memorial Park4117 Overland Ave., Culver City, CA

Street Food Cinema is also hosting an outdoor screening of Twilight on Saturday, October 8th. Doors open at 5:30 pm, the band begins performing at 6:45 pm, and the movie starts at 8:00 pm. Food trucks will be on-site as well. Tickets are available online. (Rated PG-13.)

Grand Park’s 10th AnniversaryGrand Park200 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90012

Grand Park is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this weekend, Saturday, October 8th and Sunday, October 9th. The celebration includes “live music performances, innovative art installations, wellness workshops and activities and more.” The 10th Anniversary Concert is scheduled for Saturday, October 8th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Then on Sunday, October 9th the festivities include a Family Festival as well as CicLAvia. Check the website for all the details.

Reyes Adobe DaysReyes Adobe Historial Site and Park30400 Rainbow Crest Dr., Agoura Hills, CA 91301

Reyes Adobe Days is happening this weekend, Saturday, October 8th and Sunday, October 9th. The festivities include a parade, live musical performances, children’s activities (including Rancho-era activities, a petting zoo, and pony rides), tours of the Adobe, food, and much more. Check the website for all the details. 

Rooftop Cinema Club1310 E. Franklin Ave., El Segundo, CA 90245

Rooftop Cinema’s El Segundo location is screening a few family-friendly films this weekend. On Saturday, October 8th, Hotel Transylvania (rated PG) will be shown at 1:00 pm and Halloweentown (rated PG) will be shown at 4:15 pm. And on Sunday, October 9th there is a 1:15 pm showing of The Nightmare Before Christmas (rated PG) and a 4:15 showing of Cruella – Open Captions (rated PG-13). Cinema snacks are available for purchase on-site. Tickets are available online.

CicLAvia – Heart of LADowntown LA including Echo Park, Chinatown, Boyle Heights, and New 6th Street Bridge 

On Sunday, October 9th from 9 am to 4 pm, CicLAvia goes to the “Heart of LA.” This 7-mile course will take families through Downtown LA including Echo Park, Chinatown, Boyle Heights, and the New 6th Street Bridge. If you’re not familiar with CicLAvia, it’s a non-car event where streets are only open for cyclists, pedestrians, and runners. It’s not a race, so families can explore at their own pace. You can enter and exit anywhere along the route. Check the website for information about the route and safety tips.

Free 2nd Sunday @ PAM – MindfulnessUSC Pacific Asia Museum46 N. Los Robles Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101

Families are invited to the USC Pacific Asia Museum on Sunday, October 9th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. On the second Sunday of the month, the museum offers free admission. Sunday’s activities are all focused on “practicing mindfulness through art.” Activities include story time, family-friendly yoga, a gallery scavenger hunt, and more. An activity schedule is available on the website. 

Sunday FundayWallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts9390 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Beverly Hills, CA 90210

The Wallis invites families to Sunday Funday happening on Sunday, October 9th. The fun begins at 11:00 am with a performance by Broadway Babies. Then, Debbie Allen and/or instructors from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy will offer Salsa Dance instruction, open to all levels and ages.
