Buy a Trip Permit

ATTENTION: Trip permits are non-refundable.

You can buy a trip permit:

• Using DMV2U for:
• Passenger Vehicles
• Light Trailers
• Travel Trailers
• Campers
• Motor Homes
• Snowmobiles
  
• Motorcycles
  
• Mopeds
  
•  From the Commerce and Compliance Division for:
• Heavy Motor Vehicle/Over-Dimension;
• Heavy Trailer; or
• Registration Weight. 
  

To apply, you must provide:

• Your name and address;
• Your driver license or ID card number and the state it was issued by;
• The year, make, and model of the vehicle;
• The vehicle identification number;
• If Oregon DMV has no record of the vehicle, provide a copy of your insurance card or policy, registration card, sales contract, or a pencil tracing of the vehicle identification number;
• Insurance company name and policy number (for motor vehicles only);
• Any additional requirements listed for the type of trip permit you are applying for; and
• The trip permit fee.

Types of Trip Permits

Trip Permit from Another State

​You can drive in Oregon using your valid trip permit from another state. You must keep proof of insurance in the vehicle.

Light Vehicle Trip Permit

Allows the use of unregistered:

• Passenger vehicles (10,000 pounds or less combined weight, ORS 801.199);
• Light trailers and special use trailers (8,000 pounds or less loaded weight, ORS 801.330​);
• Low-speed vehicles;
• Medium-speed electric vehicles;
• Mopeds; or
• Motorcycles.

Requirement:

• $34 fee for 21 consecutive days.

You can only buy two permits for the same vehicle in a 12-month period.

Recreational Vehicle Trip Permit

Allows the use of unregistered:

• Campers;
• Travel trailers; or
• Motor homes.

Requirements:

• $34 fee for 1 to 10 days;
• Verify the RV is no more than 45 feet long; and
• Proof you own the vehicle, if you are not the owner on Oregon DMV records. 

You can only buy permits for up to 10 days for the same RV in a 12-month period.  You can buy multiple permits for less than 10 days, but the total days for a 12-month period cannot be more than 10.

Heavy Motor Vehicle Trip Permit

Allows the use of unregistered:

• Motor vehicles with a combined (ORS 801.199​) or loaded weight (ORS 801.330) over 10,000 pounds.
• Motorized fixed load vehicles.

This permit cannot be used on:

• Tow/recovery vehicles; or
• Motor homes.

Requirements:

• $43 fee for 10 consecutive days; and
• Combined weight (ORS 801.199).

Weight-Mile Tax and Over-Dimension Permits

Vehicles with a combined weight over 26,000 pounds may be subject to weight-mile tax. Vehicles with a combined weight over 80,000 pounds require an over-dimension permit.​

Registration Weight Trip Permit

​Allows the use of Oregon-registered vehicles at a higher weight than the current registration allows.

These trip permits are often used for a registered passenger vehicle to:

• Pull a heavy trailer (not including travel trailers, fixed loads, or special use trailers) weighing over 8,000 pounds; or
• Operate at a registration weight (ORS 801.420) over 10,000 pounds.

This permit cannot be used on for-rent vehicles.

Requirements:

• $5 fee for 10 consecutive days; and
• Maximum operating weight.

Registered Vehicle Trip Permit

Allows the use of Oregon-registered vehicles under conditions, or in ways not allowed with the current registration.

These trip permits are often used by:

• Government vehicles with E plates; or
• School buses with SC plates.

This permit cannot be used on:

• Farm;
• Prorated farm;
• For-rent;
• Charitable/non-profit;
• Tow/recovery; or
• Manufactured structure transporter.

Requirement:

• $7.50 fee for 10 consecutive days.
