Sometimes moms and dads they fall out of love lyrics

So I’m about a month late with this review, but better late than never right? This past February, British singer-songwriter James TW released his latest single, “When You Love Someone“.

The melody is centered around the acoustic guitar, which is played in a light manner and features a repetitive rhythm. This flowing instrumental is slowly joined by piano, electric guitar, bass, and a percussion shaker. As these instruments enter the scene, the melody increasingly evolves but is still second to the lyrics and James’s vocal.  The piece is from the perspective of a set of parents, who are attempting to explain their divorce to their adolescent son.  Even with this heavy subject, the uplifting melody and the sincere vocal offsets the all too familiar tale of families being torn apart. James found inspiration for the single from witnessing a similar situation unfold for a young boy he was teaching music to. According to James, he wanted there to be a song for children being effected by divorce to “give them hope and to make them realize that what’s happening just might be for the best”. It is this positivity and honesty that makes the single so worthy of your attention. The initial lyrics illustrate the subject of the piece struggling to come to terms with the divorce, as he resorts to fighting and being distant at school. His parents reassure him that “you’ve gotta believe us, it’s for the best” because “sometimes moms and dads fall out of love / sometimes two homes are better than one”. Personally, I think the most chilling part of the piece is the phrase “you’ll understand when you love someone”. As children, we are exposed to the happy and the ugly of relationships, and not just from our own parents’ marriage. We see our friends’ parents, our relatives, or even relationships on TV and in film. In this environment, we grow up with a certain expectation of what love is and how love can survive. In reality though, it’s not until you are actually in a relationship yourself that you understand what needs to be done for the best of everyone involved. It’s true, “sometimes the best intentions just ain’t enough”, and sometimes we have to walk away and heal rather than stay and try to mend something broken.  The fact that James is able to communicate this with a single phrase shows his maturity as both an artist and songwriter.

Prior to the release of the single, James also debuted “Black & Blue” in 2015.  The melody is solely comprised of the acoustic guitar, which is even used as a percussion instrument towards the end of the piece. Lyrically, the song describes a failing relationship, as the female wants to end things where they are. However, James attempts to convince her that this should not be the end. This plea is perfectly summed up by the eloquent line “let’s wait out the storm, take one deep breath / ’cause giving up leads to regret”.  Also available for purchase and for streaming is his cover of Natalie Imbruglia‘s “Torn“.  Ironically enough, Imbruglia’s version was released the same year James was born (1997).  The rich tone of James’s vocal echoes the pain and uncertainty of the words, even adding more of an R&B feel to track. Melodically, the tune is updated to possess more of a groove than the original recording.

Can’t get enough of James’s voice? Then be sure to check out his YouTube channel for an array of acoustic covers, ranging from Kodaline to John Mayer to Ed Sheeran to even a clever mashup of One Direction and James Bay. You’re guaranteed to find one you like. Earlier this month, James supported Shawn Mendes at Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall and is currently in Austin for the SXSW Festival. Things are just kicking off for James TW, and now is your chance to become a fan of this young talent.
