Plants vs zombies garden warfare 2 deluxe edition

I received this game on release day after pre-ordering it. After having and playing the game for a week now (roughly 25 game hours), and playing the Beta, I am stunned at how much content there is to this game when compared to the original Garden Warfare (GW1). This game also improves on the successful features of GW1 in every way.

You can play split screen in every game mode and each player will get XP and coins. In GW1 there was only one "Split Screen" mode which was basically offline Garden Ops where only the primary user (Team Leader) would receive coins and XP. No PS+ account required.

I have played every mode in both releases (including GW1) with a simple FREE PSN account but you shouldn't even need that to play as long as you don't mind that it won't keep track of your stats, XP, coins, etc. I really do not know or understand why some reviewers claim that you still need a paid PS+ account for this. I play on a PS4 and it simply is not the case for me.

There is more depth to the game environment. Each world you spawn for the different game modes seem even bigger and contains even more detail than those of the original GW 1 release in my opinion. Add to that the improved graphics.

Zombies can now defend with the new Graveyard Ops mode. With that are some new plant bosses and spawnable plants which are new and exciting. Zombies have a variety of zombots which can be placed to help you defend your graveyard similar to the flower pots for plants in Garden Ops.

Backyard Battleground is extremely cool. If you are someone that just wants to jump right in and start shooting then no problem. Just log in and move your character out the front gate of your Plant or Zombie stronghold and you can instantly get into a scrum without choosing a game mode from a menu. Every vanquish you get counts towards your XP and any current quests you may have chosen. You can also explore and find things like Garden Nome statues and Snow Globes which add coins and help you with couple of side quests. You will also find plants and zombies that will send you on mini side games. There are also chests throughout the backyard which can be opened with stars you receive from achieving quests.

Raise the flag in the middle of the Backyard for wave after wave of enemies. Lots of coins and XP to be had along with crates you can open with AI controlled character allies which will help you defend the backyard.

Favorite Multiplayer Modes like Welcome Mat, Team Vanquish, Suburbination, Vanquish Confirmed, Nome Bomb, and Turf Takeover are all back along with a Mixed Mode that has all of them in one Mode.

The new characters are a mixed bag for me personally but I am sure they all have appeal to some. My favorite new characters so far have been mostly plants.

I really like the raw offense that the Kernel Korn class brings but if you don't watch you HP he can go down quickly. He can call an effective air strike with Butter Barrage similar to the Garlic Drone's Corn Strike. There is also the Shuck Shot which is basically akin to the Zombie Soldier's ZPG that must be aimed.

Citron is interesting with his high HP, shield, and endless ammo weapon (though it does occasionally need a cool down). He feels like a tank but with limited offense. Rolling around in Citron Ball mode is different with short bursts of Super Speed but is limited on offense with a Quick Dash which must be recharged after each use. Still you can keep him in the game for longer periods than most characters before being vanquished. His 3rd ability is the EMPeach which will stun opponents but seems especially effective against the Imps' ZMech specifically.

The Rose has been said by others early on to be "over-powered" but I simply find the Rose boring. It's primary weapon does home in on targets but is quite weak. The Goatify ability will turn opponents into goats when successfully hit and though it was pretty hilarious the first few times it did get old fairly quickly for me. It can slow down opponents with Time Snare and move briefly while being invulnerable with Arcane Enigma. Still I died plenty as the Rose and didn't find my kill-count of enemies going above any other character class. In fact I found the Rose to be an average to slightly below average killer.

New Zombies include Imp & Z-Mech, Dead Beard the Pirate, and Super Brainz. I don't know why but I don't find any of the new Zombies to be more exciting than the new Plant characters but that could just be me so take this with a grain-of-salt.

The Imp has a lot of offense and speed but can literally die in an instant. The gravity grenade suspends frozen opponent above the ground but they can still fire on you. Impkata is a spinning 100 round barrage of fire. If you can make them last long enough you will be rewarded with Robo Call which places the Imp inside a heavily armored and heavily offensive Z-Mech which can bring the pain but will only last for 70 seconds before it self destructs if opponents do not take it out first.

Super Brainz has high health and a varied array of offensive abilities including the ability to brawl with his primary Heroic Fists. Super Ultra Ball is a medium ranged attack of exploding energy. Heroic Kick is another medium ranged attack that sprints the character forward quickly in a burst similar to the All-Star's Sprint attack. Turbo Twister is another close attack in which he spins continuously smacking any plant close enough to be sucked in.

Captain Deadbeard is a Pirate who can be effective close or at range. The primary weapon is effective on targets close or afar. In addition they can summon a parrot that takes to the skies raining down full auto fire or an air strike of Eggsplosion. The Cannon Rodeo places the Captain atop an 8-shot cannon good for blasting opponents with semi-heavy damage per shot. The Barrel Blast places the Captain in a slow moving barrel which can be set to explode for devastating damage once you place it where you want it.

Again, overall there is really nothing for me not to like about this game. All 3 of my kids ages 9 to 12 have also played this game with and without me for hours of fun already. I have only touched upon the many, many things to discover in this game and feel like I will be spending a good many more hours before I discover them all. This game really is fun for the entire family as it leaves out all of the blood, gore and adult themes of many of today's shooter games.

UPDATE 08/19/16: After almost 6 months of play I am just shy of level 2500 playing an average of 1 to 2 hours per day. Some days I don't play due to work and family obligations and occasionally I will play a marathon of between 4 and 8 hours or so.

I have unlocked almost all Plant Characters. Exceptions I can think of off the top of my head are the Iron Citron and the Party Corn. On the Zombie side I have unlocked all except the Party/Disco variants and the Computer Scientist. All of these "Special" variants are considered "Legendary" in the game and must be unlocked by gaining pieces playing Infinity Mode or opening a lot of card packs and getting them randomly.

Since launch the game has release a couple of new player environments. One is the Aqua Center on the Zombie side. If you have played the original PVZ GW1, you will recognize it as a re-worked version of the Plant's Garden Center. The other is Zomburbia which features and ultimate glow of destroying a giant robot before it is unleashed by the Zombies against the Plants.

Community Challenges were introduced in a recent patch. It features coins and special packs for reaching specific goals that must be achieved by the entire online community playing the game. The seem to occur every week or two and so far have always been different.

There were also a few additional Special Challenges added that can be accessed from The Backyard. The first is a rocket powered chomper that must make various speed deliveries of pizza within a time limit. You will access this from the order window at Chomper's Pizza. The second is a delivery goat that must deliver burgers for the Zomburger restaurant outside the Zombie Stronghold also in the backyard.

So basically, after 6 months I am still enjoying the game. There are still characters I haven't unlocked and have only leveled up maybe 25% of the total characters to "Master" status. With the amount of things I still have left to accomplish in this game and the amount of time I have available to play I can see myself still playing in another 6 months or even beyond. Especially if they continue to add new content.
