Matcha face milk fourth ray

Hola beauties, welcome back for my first Fourth Ray Beauty review! Last Month I promised you reviews of the Matcha Face Milk & Rose Face Milk from my Fourth Ray Beauty Haul and after 30+ days of testing I can finally share my thoughts!

I’m always weary of bloggers who have a review of a new product immediately after it’s release, especially if it wasn’t sent it in advance for testing purposes. Skincare is something that takes time to test and see how your skin responds so I can never write skincare reviews right away. This review is focusing on the Matcha and Rose Face Milks from Fourth Ray. The products are so similar that it seemed redundant to write a post for both products, and this way you don’t need to wait longer for a second review! Let’s talk about the Matcha Milk first…

Fourth Ray Beauty’s Matcha Milkretails for $10USD and contains 0.5fl oz of product. If you’re interested in this product I highly recommend picking up the Wide Awake bundle. It’s only $5 more and contains a full sized Matcha Milk & Watermelon Seed Oil as well as a travel sized Fresh AF Mist.

Matcha Milk is intended to be used as a moisture booster, not a full moisturizer. If you skin isn’t dry like mine you might be able to get away with using it as a moisturizer, but I wouldn’t recommend it. This product is supposed to energize your skin and contains matcha. For those of you who don’t know, matcha is powdered green tea leaves. Green tea is an antioxidant.

According to Paula’s Choice green tea antioxidants “can help defend skin’s surface from the environmental factors that have the most pronounced negative effects on skin. Green tea also has a distinct calming effect, making it a great ingredient to visibly soothe red areas.” [Source] I love going to Paula’s choice for skincare info because they always cite their sources instead of expecting me to believe them blindly.

Packaging

I’m only going to talk about the packaging once, because obviously the packaging of both products is the same. I love the simple & clean design of the face milk bottles, they’re user friendly and look pretty on my shelf.

These face milks don’t look like a drugstore-priced item. If I didn’t know anything about the brand and saw these products on a shelf I would expect Fourth Ray’s price points to be $5-10 higher. But Fourth Ray is a sister brand to ColourPop so affordable products are their thing. I’m all for it!

I LOVE the dropper bottle on the matcha & rose face milks. I’m rather miffed that the packaging of FRB’s oils are so awful, I barely use them because I can’t figure out a good way to dispense the product. I resorted to vigorously shaking the bottles in order to get out two drops of oil. The Face Milk droppers are great, the dropper tube is curved at the bottom so you can get all the product out when it runs low. It dispenses enough product with one squeeze for my entire face. I usually use an extra drop for my neck as well.

Performance

The Matcha Face Milk feels really nice on my skin. It really does have a milky texture, it’s exactly what I would expect from a product with “Milk” in the name. It absorbs quickly and leaves behind a much needed hydrating layer. It’s been around minus 25 and below the past few weeks in Edmonton and my skin is not happy with the weather! I’ve been layering on this face milk before my Pixi Rose Ceramide Cream and luckily my dry patches are still under control.

With my particular desert dry skin type I don’t think that the Matcha Milk could stand on it’s own, especially not in this weather. I actually had to change moisturizers last week because even with this booster in my routine it wasn’t enough. I still prefer the Caudalie SOS Thirst Quenching Serum in my routine over this, but that serum is $40 something USD compared to these $10 Face milks sooo..

My one complaint about the Matcha Face Milk is that it doesn’t smell very nice. I generally don’t like Matcha. Every year I try a matcha or green tea latte. Every year I drink it sadly because I really thought that this year, this year is going to be the year where I discover how much I like it! It’s the same story with Eggnog. When will I learn… Anyways, I don’t really like the smell of the Matcha Face Milk but that could be because I generally don’t like matcha anyways? It’s hard to say.

Overall I think that the Matcha Milk is worth $10. It’s a nice addition to your routine if you don’t have a budget for pricier hydrating serums!

Fourth Ray Beauty Rose Face Milk Review

The Fourth Ray Beauty Rose Face Milk retails for $10USD and contains 0.5fl oz of product. Just like the Matcha Face Milk I recommend picking up the Rose Face Milk in a value set. The Keep it Calm set was my favourite out of the two, it contains a travel sized Mellow Milk Mist and a full sized Rose Face Milk & Skin Hero Oil.

The big draw of the Rose Face Milk for me was the soothing nature of this product. The Rose Milk is also intended as a moisture booster. My favourite skincare routine right now uses the Matcha Milk in the morning and the Rose Milk in the evening.

Performance

The performance of the Rose Face Milk product is very similar to the Matcha Milk. The main difference is that the Matcha Milk has antioxidant properties and the rose milk is intended to soothe.That being said a quick google search turned up that Matcha also has soothing properties in addition to antioxidant benefits so it’s hard to say one is better than the other. The Rose Face Milk smells soft & floral but it isn’t a fake rose smell. I’m not generally a fan of rosy scents but it’s subtle and smells much better than the Matcha Milk!

When I was sick with dry patches under my nose from sneezing & blowing my nose the Rose Milk actually did feel soothing on those raw spots. Occasionally however I noticed a mild tingling/burning sensation which then went away in about 15 seconds. I don’t know if that’s because it was doing something to the dry spots on my face or what, but if you have sensitive skin I would stay away from the Rose Face Milk. It does feel soothing most of the time but those rare occasions where I experienced an odd reaction gives me concern for those with more sensitive skin than I.

I still preferred the Rose Milk over the Matcha Milk and would repurchase the Rose milk. Like I said that burning sensation was very mild, and it only seemed to happen if I had dry texture on my cheeks. The scent is also a deciding factor for me. Product that smells nice, vs product that doesn’t smell nice. Which would you choose?

Final Thoughts

I have enjoyed the formula of these face milks. This winter they have helped soothe & hydrate my dry skin but they don’t eliminate dry patches on their own. I think that these would be really nice in the summer as a lightweight moisturizer if you live somewhere more humid than me. I will consider repurchasing these products as long as they remain on ColourPop’s website; However I wouldn’t buy them directly from Fourth Ray Beauty again. Their shipping to Canada is quite expensive and the minimum for free shipping is much higher than ColourPop.
