How to turn on the light on my phone

Not too long ago, there was a time when people needed actual flashlights during a power outage. Nowadays, you can use your Galaxy phone as a handy but powerful flashlight. The flashlight feature is integrated into your phone's Quick settings panel, so it's easy to access and turn on when you're in a pinch.

The flashlight feature uses the phone's camera LED as a bright light that can illuminate the area around you.

To use the flashlight, open the Quick settings panel by swiping down from the top of the screen using two fingers. Next, tap the Flashlight icon to turn the light on or off.

Depending on your setup, you may need to swipe left to see the Flashlight icon. You can also rearrange the button order or add icons to the panel based on your preference.

Your XCover6 Pro’s flashlight can be activated instantaneously by pressing the XCover key or Top key. However, you must first program the keys in the Advanced features menu.

You can also use Bixby Routines to automatically enable the flashlight when you need it most, such as during a certain time of the day.

  1. Navigate to and open Bixby Routines.

  2. Next, tap Add routine at the bottom.

  3. Tap the photo under If, and then select your desired trigger for the routine, such as Time period or Place. For this example, choose Start manually.

  4. Next, tap the photo under Then, and tap Functions.

  5. Tap Turn on Flashlight, and then tap Next.

  6. Tap Routine name to change the name of your routine. Select an icon and a color if desired. Tap Done.

  7. Your routine will be set! You can check it by tapping My routines at the bottom of the screen.

Depending on the situation, you may need brighter or dimmer lights. Thankfully, your Galaxy phone's flashlight can be adjusted for that too.

Open the Quick settings panel by swiping down from the top of the screen using two fingers. Tap the word Flashlight (the text right below the icon). Turn on the flashlight by tapping the switch, and then adjust the slider to change the brightness level.

Note: The brightness slider will be grayed out if you don't turn on the flashlight first.

How to turn on the flashlight with gestures

On some Android phones, it's possible to turn on your torch using just a gesture. This is a movement or action that allows you to activate quick actions like turning on your torch.

  • Open the settings of your phone
  • Search for gestures
  • Check to see if there's an option for the flashlight in there

On Android 13 there's the option to use "Quick Tap" gestures which can be found within the gestures settings. You can set it up so a quick tap on the back of your phone will turn on the torch.

On some Motorola phones, you can turn on the torch by shaking your phone in a certain motion.

On OnePlus phones there's an option to turn on the flashlight with "Screen off Gestures" these involve writing a letting on the screen when the phone is turned off. So you can just draw a letter like O, V, S, M or W and turn on the torch. Look for "Screen off Gestures" in the settings to turn this on.
