How to tighten a loose moen single handle bathroom faucet

Can't seem to figure out how to tighten this. The whole thing has become loose up top. It's in a new (3 yrs) house

Moen has an actual socket to tighten the nut in question. I have also been able to tighten them with a small, 6", adjustable wrench. The Moen tool can usually be picked up at your home store or a plumbing supply store. here's what the tool looks like:

You could also use a deep socket if you are a tool collector. Good luck

A single lever faucet can wear with age and use. Often, you only need to tighten the screw holding it in place. Other cases require a little more work. Either way, the average homeowner can tackle this task. The same technique will work whether the faucet is in a shower or on a sink. In addition to fixing the annoying loose lever, checking all valves and faucets is something any home inspector would do if you put your home on the market.

  1. Remove the plate that covers the screw holding the lever in place. On most single lever faucets, you can pop out this small plate with a thin-bladed knife. On others, you will have to remove a tiny setscrew underneath the handle using a hex wrench.

  2. Tighten the screw holding the lever. Using the proper size and shape screwdriver, gently tighten the screw until it is firmly in place. Test the lever to see if it needs to have more work.

  3. Wrap the valve stem with plumber’s tape. If tightening the screw doesn’t work, the stem may be wearing out. Remove the handle and wrap a single layer of plumber’s tape around the stem. Replace the handle and test. If necessary, add single layers of tape until you have a snug fit.

Why is my bathroom faucet handle loose?

It's usually a result of wear and tear on the faucet stem, or cartridge. The cartridge attaches to the handle and the two components work together to control the water flow. When the stem becomes stripped, the handle will feel loose or just spin on end.
