There's nothing you can do to stop the inevitable 3 AM smoke detector chirp (because batteries never get low on them at 4 PM, that wouldn't be disruptive enough), but this will keep you from doing the crazy dance from room to room trying to find exactly which one it is. We have smoke detectors relatively close together in my place so sometimes it's hard to figure out which one is chirping; plus, by changing the batteries in all of them you minimize the number of nights you are awoken by a low battery chirp!

Edit: wow! I didn't realize people felt so strongly about smoke detectors. I just wanted to make it clear that I'm not only advocating changing the batteries when a single alarm chirps. But if you're like me, even if you schedule a date every year you plan on changing all the batteries, you will STILL forget somehow. This is just a nice solution in that, instead of waiting for each battery to die in each individual detector, you only have the battery die in one detector before each one in your house gets a fresh battery.

Edit 2: I love how many people have stories about the dreaded chirping.

Its currently midnight and the smoke alarm.in my room and the living room have been going off every 30 seconds ever since I got home (8 pm). I cannot fucking sleep. I have an early morning tomorrow.

One of the smoke alarms doesnt even have the battery in it but it's still going. I took the battery put of the living room one to put it in the bedroom one because I thought it would work for some reason.

I camt exactly just sleep in another room either. I live in a tiny apartment and no matter where I am the alarms are as piercing as if I'm right next to them. Help

You should get in the habit of always having some batteries around. A pack of AA, AAA, a couple 9 volt, a pack of C and a pack of D. You can get them in small packages, but tv remotes, flashlights, smoke detectors, and even some thermostats are battery operated, and they are the kind of thing that when you need a new battery, you really need one.

As for your detector, try hitting the reset button, if that doesn't work you need to replace the battery to get it to stop. (I also recommend a carbon monoxide detector in addition to the smoke detector.)

Title says it all. First apartment college student. 11:30 I'm getting ready to go to bed and I hear the chirping. Figure it needs a new battery, so I make the 15 minute trek to and from Walgreens in the cold to get a ridiculously priced 9V battery, change the batteries in the smoke detector, press the reset button and wait for it to stop. It hasn't stopped. It's been almost 45 minutes and I've tried everything I could find on the internet and nothing has worked. My bedroom has no door so there's no escaping the sound. I put my loud ass window fan on the floor right next to my bed to try and drown it out but it can't cover it up. It's a complete debacle.

Someone guide me with your infinite wisdom and tell me how to make it stop. I'm getting desperate.

Edit: the detector is wired into the ceiling and keeps chirping even without batteries. A new battery was put in but it didn't help

Update: I can't unplug in from the ceiling. It chirps with the battery out and I shut off the power for the entire apartment and it still chirped. I've checked all the gas monitors to make sure it wasn't them and it wasn't. I'm legitimately at a loss

How do you get a smoke alarm to stop chirping without a battery?

Here's how to stop a smoke detector from chirping without battery:.

Rid the smoke detector of dust and debris..
Keep the smoke detector away from fans and windows..
Check the room's temperature..
Move the device to another outlet..
Check if all cables are connected..
Press the hush button..

How do you quiet a chirping smoke detector?

Resetting the Alarm.
Turn off the power to the smoke alarm at the circuit breaker..
Remove the smoke alarm from the mounting bracket and disconnect the power..
Remove the battery..
Press and hold the test button for at least 15 seconds. ... .
Reconnect the power and reinstall the battery..

Will chirping eventually stop?

A smoke alarm will eventually stop chirping if you do nothing. Once the battery has run out completely, the device will switch to residual power. Eventually, this will also drain and the device won't have enough power to beep and let you know it's out of power.

Is there a way to stop the beep of a dying smoke alarm battery?

For battery-only detectors, you will need to remove the detector's batteries, then hold the reset button down for 15-20 seconds. Replace the batteries and reconnect the detector. It will probably beep one time to show that it is connected, but it should not continue to beep after that.
