Suddenly, all of your contacts are gone from Google and your phone.

This happens more than you’d think, and it is largely because too many applications make it easy to set your empty smartphone address book to overwrite your up-to-date Google Contacts list, rather than the other way around.

Fortunately, Google Contacts has built-in versioning functionality so you can “roll back” your Gmail Contacts to an earlier state, restoring any lost contacts in mere seconds. Here’s how it works:

Log into your Gmail account via the web
Click on the Gmail in the top left
When the dropdown appears, select Contacts
In the top level navigation, select More
When the dropdown appears, select Restore Contacts

You’ll have the option to roll back your entire Gmail Contacts list to any saved state—which is to say, any time you altered the data in your Google Contacts—within the last 30 days. In the case of a full overwrite that deleted all your Gmail Contacts, just roll back to the save point right before you installed the destructive smartphone app.

Note that in case of need you can easily restore your Google contacts. Please follow these steps:

Login to contacts.google.com with your Google/Gmail account.
In the left vertical menu choose Bin.

Regardless of how many contacts you add or delete, Gmail keeps a 30-day history of every contact in your address book. 1. Open Google Contacts in your browser.

2. Tap or click on the Settings (gear) icon in the upper right corner.

3. Tap or click Undo changes.

4. Choose the timeframe you'd like to restore from, anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 days ago, then tap or click Undo.

5. Gmail will confirm by saying, "Your contacts list will be restored back to how it was on [date you chose]. It may take some time for these changes to show up on your device."
