Whether you suspect that someone has gained unauthorized access to your Facebook account or you simply forgot your Facebook password so you can't sign in, you can reset your password easily at the Facebook website or with the iOS or Android Facebook app.

Change Your Facebook Password in Facebook Account Settings

If you're already signed in to your Facebook account or can sign in and just want to change your password, these steps get the job done.

  1. While signed in to your account at the Facebook.com website, select the down arrow in the upper-right corner and choose Settings & Privacy > Settings.

If you are using the Facebook app, tap the menu icon at the top of the Android app or the bottom of the iOS app. Then scroll down to tap Settings & Privacy > Settings.

  2. Select Security and Login > Change password.

  3. Enter your current password and a new password. Re-type the new password. When you are finished, select Save Changes.

Change Your Facebook Password if You Forgot Your Password

If you're unable to sign in to Facebook because you forgot your password, you need to follow a different process.

  1. Go to Facebook in a web browser or open the Facebook app on your mobile device. Try to sign in to your account with your email address and any password you think you can remember.

If your login details are incorrect, you won't be able to access your account.

  2. Don't navigate away from the page or the app. Instead, select Forgot Password? beneath the login fields.

  3. Depending on the account information you associated with your Facebook account, you are asked to reset your password using one of the following three methods:

    • Verification via your Google account (using Gmail)
    • Verification via an email address
    • Verification via a phone number

Make your selection and choose Continue.

If you choose to reset your password using your phone number, you won't be able to do so if you have two-factor authentication enabled with that number. You need to use a different phone number or an email address.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the verification process. Enter your new Facebook password in the given fields and select Continue.

Depending on the method you choose, you might receive a text or email message with a code that you must enter into Facebook for verification purposes.

  5. Save your new password somewhere safe. Any of the best password managers can be an excellent solution for storing your password.

When You Can't Access Your Phone Number or Email for Your Account

If you can no longer access the phone number or email address that you currently have associated with your Facebook account, Facebook suggests a few different things you can try to regain access:

  • Use Facebook's identity page:Go toFacebook.com/login/identity in a web browser and locate your Facebook account. Then follow the instructions given to you to try to regain access.
  • Regain access to the associated email account: Try to recover your access using an associated Gmail password, iCloud Mail password, or Windows Live Hotmail password. Then resume resetting your Facebook password with that email address.
  • Use Trusted Contacts: If you set up this feature with your Facebook account, you can use your Trusted Contacts to regain access without a phone number or email address.
