Worst experience of my life
I was hired and within three weeks my assistant manager and manager had been fired. They promoted me to assistant manager but had no plan to train me at all. I was left at the store many times on my own even though they were aware that I had zero training. I worked 24 days without a day off and nine days without a lunch break. On one occasion, I was told to be at the store at 6 AM so that I could use my key to unlock the door for an employee who would be there and then I could go home. This was Father’s Day morning, so I carried my son out of bed put him in the car and drove to work.open the door for an employee and be on my way. The night before, I asked my superiors if they were 100% positive that someone would be there, they assured me that they had confirmation. I get there a 5:45, and I sat there and no one showed up. 8 o’clock comes, it’s time to open the store and they told me I had to be there and open the store, even though I told him that my son who is disabled, is in the car. In so many words, they basically explained that I would be fired if I did not stay in that I could not leave the store. Worker is not showing up, and scheduling problems was a daily routine. I can’t tell you how many days I worked without a day off and how many days I worked over 10 hours without a lunch break. Also, I worked many hours overtime and to this day I have not been compensated. One day a bunch of corporate people started visiting stores in our area, that’s when they started firing

Corporate Culture Is All About The Money
Like most retailers, Dollar General has its share of benefits, but they are outweighed by the allure of the almighty dollar. I was hired in at a good pay rate for retail, then sent through what I consider to be the worst Assistant Manager training ever. It included 99% computer based learning that was not really relative to everyday activities and only 20 minutes working a cash register prior to being handed the keys to a store. Placed into the worst performing store in the district, myself and a brand new Store Manager who had similar training were expected to create a model store from day one, which was impossible due to the amount of theft on the part of the public and lack of support from upper management. I was eventually moved to 2nd worst performing store to be closer to home and performed very well, eventually receiving and stocking up to 85% of each truck on my own, setting store displays and managing regular operations. However, on one shift, I was the victim of a strong-armed robbery and Dollar General's response was to write me up for it. A short time later when the district manager was to leave the company, I was again written up under the guise of a procedural policy violation that did not in any way shape or form cost the company anything. Very productive workplace that has great opportunities for carreer advancement
Dollar General gave me advancement opportunities which I did take advantage of up to, Assistant Manager Work is very steady. There is never a lack of work. Each and every day is a new and advancing adventure Management is wonderful and very understanding of work situations and very productive when it comes to completing and getting everyone on board to solve problems and getting a task at hand completed Co-workers are wonderful. Everyone knows exactly what they are to do during each work day as soon as they clock in. Management is always make sure to greet all employees upon entering the premises and gives them their task for the daily shift. Co-workers are always pleasant to work with. Problems are never an issue among co-workers because they form an alliance together to solve any and all issues at hand. The hardest part of the job is at times learning without prior notice that a district, regional manager or other professional may be coming in at any time to inspect the store and making sure that everything down to the very last detail is completed before and even if an upper superior level position management person may be entering the premises. The most enjoyable portion of the job is just being around friendly faces day to day and being able to work as a team to get the tasks at hand completed and making it priority to plan ahead with those co-workers. This company should be re-branded as "Dollar Plantation" , because the work ethic & expectations are exactly the same. As a key holder, you will have no life outside of the job. As an associate, you are an expendable cog in a perpetually broken machine. The company treats you as a possession and will grind you into dust in the name of "low overhead". Your fellow employees may be fabulous to work with, but the methods dictated by corporate in order to do the job are inefficient, inadequate, and oftentimes unnecessarily dangerous. After a week or so of working at one of their locations, it will become painfully obvious that you are expected to function like a machine, not a human being. Speed & productivity are paramount; correctness & safety are insignificant. They care about the shelves being full & the registers being open and the profit being generated, and NOTHING ELSE. The psychological & physical strain is unending and no problem is ever solved (and is rarely ever even addressed). Severely outdated/refurbished/inferior equipment, repeated problems with point of sale system software, a return policy that encourages customer fraud, unattainable daily workloads and expectations for all employees. The unceasingly toxic relationship between DM's and store managers creates unnecessary pressure and belittlement. Productive and fun environment work place
A typical day at work was opening the store Clock in exactly 7:30am Pull all the tills and bank bag out to count to make sure they were accurately for the day shifts to start up. Logged all information on a day to day money log. Also Made sure paper work, such as sales receipts, voids, end of shift reports were caught up and done accurately. Walk the store for (5) five minutes to make sure the store was recovered and ready for shoppers to come in and find what they need. Starting at 8:00am my cashier would come in and run their cash register while I was checking in the vendors with a handheld scanner called (HHT) and set up Plan-o-gram's which is pricing labels, rotating products take some products off the shelves and placed them in the mark down shelf if needed. Next cashier would come and from 12:00pm to 5pm and run the register while helping put up HBC (Health Beauty care) while I putting up chemicals. We had (1) hour to put up a freight. By 2:00 pm I was on a conference call for sometimes 30 to 45mins sometimes a whole hour. When all ads were completed and mark downs put up in there proper place then I began to clean up for the end of the shift. Which started with cleaning the restrooms from long day use of customers. Then start recovering, swept floor from front to back. Made sure all trash was taking out by a certain time and made sure stock room was organized and cleaned for the next day. From my experience of 6 years at the same store I can say dg has horrible policies. Worked my way up to an assistant manager but was treated as a door mat the entire time. Worked under a bad manager who was hypocritical and showed extreme favoritism in sceduling and had complaints filed from both customers and employees with no repercussions. Full time offers benefits but I couldn't even afford the weekly payment ( wouldve been 40-50 a week on a high deductable) Vac hours are decent ( at the 5 year mark youre at 80) and you get a .25 cent raise the first 3 years on your anniversary date but hardly ever for any other reason. Yes its retail and its to be expected but I worked every single holiday for the entirety of my career and having a weekend off was a rarity. I know for a fact at one point I closed the store 5/6 nights a week including every fri sat and Sun for at least 6 months straight. There are not enough payroll hours to go around putting employees in the store alone for hours at a time. Not to mention that dg teaches you that 60% of shrink comes from employees not the customers shoving 20 body washes and 10 packs of t shirts into their pocketbooks or rolling entire buggies full of product out the door. Upper management district and regional and even loss prevention have no idea what running the store actually consists of and tells you everything youre doing wrong but hardly ever offers positive feedback. Horrible, esp if SM/DM decide to make it that way
Assistant manager, 4 and 1/2 years. Too many bad things to say. Company is constantly running on skeleton crew. 2 people in store except on truck days. Even when fully staffed, which stores usually aren't, it doesn't matter. 2 people in store per shift. They expect you to work freight, control lines, recover shelves, check in vendors, and in general do the work of 3 people. The pay is bad. Took me four years to get to making $12.50 an hour as an assistant. 1$ of that is for transferring to the worst store in the district to help fix it. Store is so understaffed that fixing is impossible. They keep bringing in SMs who are already planning on quitting when they get there, so they don't try or hold anyone accountable. They won't promote me because the condition of the store, but the condition won't improve if they don't promote or transfer someone who is competent enough to deal with the ridiculous workload(65-70 hrs a week for at least a month, followed by 55-60 hours a week regularly). SMs don't get paid enough either but they signed up for it, do it or quit. Old DM was great, new DM expects miracles. Oh, don't plan on getting a meal break. I mean, you'll clock out for one, so you won't get paid, but you'll be lucky to get half of it. Cashiers need you for EVERYTHING. Even if they are competent, they can't do line voids, they can't do returns, They can't be expected to keep up with the lines during peak hours or on weekends in the high volume stores. Easy job but poor management
I have been an Assistant Manager the last 2.5 years and have not been given any opportunities to move up. Pay is barely above minimum wage & I was still expected to go above and beyond my job description to help out the Store Manager, and I did without complaining. I took care of all the day-to-day while the Store Manager took all the credit and bad mouthed me to the District Manager behind my back. She did not want me to be pulled out of her store because she needed someone to pick up her slack She stays on her bluetooth device even when checking out customers and has the worse attitude toward people. She yells at employees and calls them stupid for things they did that she did also. These are the type of people chosen to be Store Managers and higher up at Dollar General. Dollar General does not choose wisely when promoting from within or hiring outside people for these Manager positions. Then there are no actual training programs being followed when these people get these positions. Then they expect the Assistant Managers and below to be perfect and slave for much of nothing. When minimum wage is $9.25 and they start Assistants off at $10.50, that is just sad. Then they only offer 25 cent annual raises. But you are still expected to go above your job duties, work off the clock, work inconsistent shifts, and be available whenever they call. The job itself is not hard. Terrible company to work for
I went from hired as entry level mgr to Asst Manager in three month with no traing, my first nightat work, I was left alone to office work and close the store. I was told if I needed help just call. Second night, same thing. third night; they wanted to train me. I had already trained myself, I had prowled through the office and found deposit slips and looked at others to see how to close out the store and money. later I had pneumonia, I left work to go get xrays and see the dr (was told not to go back to work) my GM insisted I return and just lay my head on the desk through my shift and do my paperwork..so i worked against Dr's orders for a week. until I couldn't get up and go. No communication with GM or DM as far as training. I was robbed at gunpoint one evening at closing, The company was more worried about did i follow procedure, I was investigated as to rather I was going to be fired. A typical day at dollar general starts with a boatload of work that includes constant over stock, conditioning, truck drops, cleaning . All of which have been pushed back do to priorities taking over priorities. It ends with the knowledge of there only being more coming in through the back than there is leaving the front.This job has taught me that staff is important and that without a sufficient amount of people working daily you will quickly become overwhelmed unless you can find work-arounds or solutions. The store held a capable manager who didn't have the manpower to support the actual needs of the store. However, the DMs do next to nothing in terms of trying to help stores succeed, often shifting the blame on lower management for things we have no control over. My coworkers (4 in total, including the store manager) who did work there were lovely people and great work with. However, most (not including me and the SM) were incapable of pulling of tougher jobs liking unloading, stocking heavy objects, or even helping customers with grabbing things from greater heights. This essentially led to what is the hardest part about the job, having very little support. This ranged from minor things such as cleaning stock or conditioning but got as serious as not being able to have the store open till close because no one was scheduled to work it. Stores would benefit having the hours to have all employees having the option of being full time. All stores need at least 4 managers. And salaried mangers should only be required to work a minimum of 40 hours. Currently there is no work life balance for store managers.
