How-To Geek is where you turn when you want experts to explain technology. Since we launched in 2006, our articles have been read more than 1 billion times. Want to know more?

Many Android users who are also big gamers will likely purchase games from the Google Play store and have credit card information stored in their account to make the process faster. Purchasing apps and other microtransactions require payment, and credit cards are the best way to complete the deal. Nevertheless, there may come a time when removing a payment method is necessary.

Users who wish to learn how to remove a payment method from Google Play are in luck. Below, you’ll find the various ways you can do so. Read on for the details.

You might notice that Google Play will ask you to provide a payment method as you install some apps. You can easily skip these, but gamers who rely on Google Play to complete microtransactions must store their credit or debit card information on Google. That’s the only way to buy in-game currency or items without entering everything each time.

However, these credit cards will also expire one day, or you may decide to switch to another bank and change cards. Therefore, the now-obsolete cards aren’t accepted for payment, so users need to remove them.

Here’s how you can do that:

  1. Launch Google Play on your Android device.
  2. On the top-right corner, tap on the menu.
  3. Select “Payments & Subscriptions.”
  4. Go to “Payment Methods.”
  5. Tap on “More.”
  6. Finally, reach “Payment Settings.”
    • You may have to sign in to Google Play if asked to do so at this point.
  7. Look for the payment method you want to remove.
  8. Tap on “Remove” and again when the option appears for a second time.

Your credit or debit card information is now gone from Google Play.

PC users can try these steps:

  1. Log into your Google Play account on your PC.
  2. From that page, click on “Edit Payment Methods.”
  3. Select “Payment Methods” from the left side.
  4. Find the payment method you want to remove.
  5. Click on “Remove.”
  6. Do the same for the second “Remove.”

After doing so, you should be free to add new payment methods as you see fit. As you go through new cards, all you need to do in the future is refer to the same steps above again before removing the information from Google Play.

Users with monthly subscriptions can also pause them if they no longer wish to pay.

How to Remove GCash Payment Method in Google Play

GCash is a popular mobile wallet and branchless banking service in the Philippines. It seamlessly integrates with Google Play, allowing users to transfer cash for purchases instantly. For this function, you’ll need a valid GCash account that’s linked to your Google Play account.

Google Play will automatically charge your GCash account if you have any active periodic subscriptions. However, if you no longer wish to use GCash, you can unlink the account from your Google Play settings too.

Follow these steps to find out how it’s done:

  1. Launch Google Play on your device.
  2. Tap on the menu located in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select “Payments & Subscriptions.”
  4. From there, go to “Payment Methods.”
  5. Pick “GCash.”
  6. Go to “More Payment Settings.”
    • Depending on your platform, you’ll be redirected to the app or website.
  7. Select the account you wish to remove.
  8. Select “Remove” to unlink that GCash account.
  9. Confirm your choice by tapping on the second “Remove” option.

The GCash account will no longer be charged for Google Play purchases.

This set of instructions will work for PC:

  1. Log into your Google Play account on your PC.
  2. From that page, click on “Edit Payment Methods.”
  3. Select “Payment Methods” from the left side.
  4. Find the GCash account you want to remove.
  5. Click on “Remove.”
  6. Do the same for the second “Remove.”

If you remove your current GCash account and have no other payment method in Google Play, you won’t be able to pay for your subscriptions. However, you can always link another GCash account or credit card number to Google Play. That way, your subscriptions can stay active so long as the app can charge you for your fees.

How to Remove a Family Payment Method in Google Play

Google Play allows families to set up family groups, where several users come together and become part of an organization. Members can still make purchases on Google Play if they possess the necessary permissions. However, this information will always be shown to the family manager.

The family manager is the one in charge of the family payment method. They can set the group up so that any members under 18 have to ask for approval before making purchases. In other words, the family manager is the boss.

If you’re a family manager and wish to remove a payment method in your family group, these instructions should help:

  1. Launch Google Play.
  2. Log in to your family manager account if required.
  3. Tap on the menu at the top-right corner.
  4. Go to “Payments & Subscriptions.”
  5. Next, go to “Payment Methods.”
  6. Locate the payment method you wish to remove.
  7. Select it and tap on “Remove.”
  8. Tap on the second “Remove” to confirm your choice.

Now, the payment option is removed.

PC users can take a look at these instructions:

  1. Log into your family manager Google Play account on your PC.
  2. From that page, click on “Edit Payment Methods.”
  3. Select “Payment Methods” from the left side.
  4. Find the payment method you want to remove.
  5. Click on “Remove.”
  6. Do the same for the second “Remove.”

While you can remove a payment option in the family group if there’s more than one, there are complaints that you can’t remove an option if it’s the only one available. The user’s only solution is to delete the entire family group, which also eliminates the credit card information from said group.

Unfortunately, it seems that the issue still exists even in 2021. Until Google implements a change or fix, the only way to remove the sole family payment method remaining is to delete the family group entirely. You’ll have to create another one, which isn’t difficult but can be very inconvenient to repeat.

How to Remove UPI Payment Method From Google Play Store

UPI stands for Unified Payments Interface, a system developed in India that combines multiple bank accounts into one app. Google Play has been working with UPI since 2016, and users can pay using UPI accounts. The money transfer process is instantaneous and doesn’t require entering card numbers every time.

After linking your UPI ID to Google Play, these instant transfers help make purchases convenient and straightforward. However, if you want to remove the ID from your Google Play account, it’s possible to do so. It only takes a minute or two.

These are the instructions for removing your UPI ID from Google Play:

  1. Launch Google Play on your Android device.
  2. Select the menu located in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Tap on “Payments & Subscriptions.”
  4. From there, go to “Payment Methods.”
  5. Head to “More Payment Settings.” Depending on your platform, you’ll be redirected to the app or website.
  6. Scroll down and look for the UPI ID.
  7. Select “Remove” to unlink the UPI account.
  8. Confirm your choice by tapping on the second “Remove” option. Your UPI ID will no longer be associated with the Google Play account.

As per the above sections, here’s how you can do so on a computer:

  1. Log into your Google Play account on your PC.
  2. From that page, click on “Edit Payment Methods.”
  3. Select “Payment Methods” from the left side.
  4. Scroll down and look for the UPI ID you want to remove.
  5. Click on “Remove.”
  6. Do the same for the second “Remove.”

Removing your UPI ID will prevent the account from getting charged when making Google Play purchases. If you don’t have a backup option set up beforehand, you may have to add another payment method to continue using your apps and services.

The steps aren’t too different for all of the payment method removal processes above, even if you move from mobile to PC or vice versa. The process is slightly faster on PC, as you can click on the link and reach the relevant page immediately.

No Overspending on Games

While controlling how much you spend on games might be one reason to remove your payment methods from Google Play, there are plenty others out there as well. Some people want to remove outdated cards, while others don’t like having too many payment options linked to Google Play at one time. Either way, you’ll find the removal process practically effortless.
