In this easy-to-follow guide, we’ll share how to read pregnancy test strip results and share actual pregnancy test strip results.

So you’ve just taken a pregnancy test and are wondering how to decipher the test results? While it is always important to reference the pregnancy test instructions, sometimes it can be helpful to see examples of positive pregnancy test results. Read on for more information.

How it works

Natalist Pregnancy Test Strips detect human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), one of the first signs of pregnancy, in urine and are over 99% accurate* when used correctly. In fact, clinical evaluations have shown that the test is more than 99% accurate from the day of your expected period.

What day to test

The Natalist Pregnancy Test Strip is designed to detect hCG as early as six days before the day of the missed period. To work out when your period is expected, count the number of days between your last few periods. Begin counting on the first day of your period to the day before your next period starts. Do this for a few cycles: add up the total number of days and divide it by the number of cycles to determine your average number of menstrual cycle days. Use that average to inform the day of your expected period.

What time of day to test

It’s best to test first thing in the morning when your urine is most concentrated. If you’re pregnant, there will be more hCG for the test to detect. This is especially important if you’re taking the test before your expected period. If you take it later in the day, make sure you don’t drink a lot of liquid in the hours before testing.

How to read your pregnancy test results

The test can show two lines:

  1. The control line (C) to make sure the test worked.

  2. The test line (T) that shows a positive result.

If two lines show up, even if the test line (T) is very faint, that’s a positive result.

If only the control line (C) shows up, the test is negative. That means there is not enough hCG present in the urine for a positive result. Either you’re not pregnant or it’s too early to test. Natalist Pregnancy Test Strips include 15 tests per box so you can easily and affordably test multiple times for peace of mind.

What do positive pregnancy test results look like?

Test results will vary depending on the amount of hCG present in the urine. Remember any test line at all, no matter how faint, is a positive test result.

*When used up to three days before your expected period. Early on in pregnancy, you may not be producing enough hCG for the test to detect. hCG hormone levels soar in early pregnancy, doubling about every two days. The more hCG your body makes, the more likely you are to get a positive result.

If you take a pregnancy test, especially if you take it early, it can be hard to tell if the result is positive or negative. Here are 12 pictures of positive pregnancy tests to help you figure it out.

Pregnancy tests work by measuring hormone levels in urine. Theoretically, we’re supposed to wait for a missed period–usually about two weeks from the date we think we may have conceived–before taking a test, because it takes a while for those hormones to get to a level the pregnancy test can detect.

Nobody wants to wait that long. People who are trying to get pregnant are really eager to find out if it’s happened as soon as possible. That leads to many of us squinting at pregnancy tests, holding them up to the light, and asking our partners, “Is that a line? I feel like I kinda see a line. Is it positive? I don’t know, what does positive look like?”

If you’re currently staring down a test and you can’t tell if that’s a faint line or your imagination, here are 12 pictures of positive pregnancy tests to help you figure it out.

The kind of test that just says “pregnant” instead of showing a line is more expensive, but they might actually save you money if you or your partner are the type to buy and take 40 tests because you aren’t sure if you know what a line looks like.

That said, those display “not pregnant” if hormone levels aren’t high enough for the test to confirm a pregnancy, whereas the “pink line” models might show a barely-perceptible shadow of a line.

Some people have even resorted to taking pregnancy tests early, then adjusting the contrast and levels in Photoshop to see if there is a line there that is just too faint to be seen with the naked eye. It’s torturous, but it’s hard to resist.

Also, if you can’t tell if it’s positive or not, make sure you’ve actually read the instructions on the pregnancy test. Some brands that look like they should just be standard “pee on a stick” tests actually want you to pee in a cup and then submerge the stick for a certain amount of time.

What does a positive test look like on first response?

Two pink lines indicate a positive result, even if one line is fainter than the other.

How should a positive pregnancy test look?

With some home pregnancy tests, one line means the test is negative and you're not pregnant, and two lines mean the test is positive and you are pregnant. A faint positive line in the results window, on the other hand, can leave you scratching your head.

What does a faint positive look like on a pregnancy test?

Each pregnancy test is different, with some brands using a red dye and others, like Clearblue, a blue dye. For a red dye test, a faint line will look light pink, whereas a blue dye test will produce a light blue line.

Should First Response line get darker?

Should pregnancy test lines get darker? In general, yes, pregnancy test results should get darker early on as a pregnancy progresses. This is because the pregnancy hormone, hCG, typically doubles every two to three days during the first few weeks of pregnancy.
