Travelers checks worth $500,000 were stolen from the First National City Bank branch at 399 Park Avenue on July 9, the police disclosed yesterday. The bank confirmed the loss but would say only that the checks had “'disap peared somewhere in transit about 10 days ago.”

When a traveler loses his travelers checks the bank or organization that sold them re places his money. But when they are stolen from the bank, the bank if not similarly cov ered. And the checks are easi ly negotiable.

There were 5,000 checks, each worth $100, stolen from Citibank.

A Queens man was arrested for allegedly trying to cash three of the stolen checks on July 10, the day after the theft, according to the police.

Detectives of the Bond and Forgery Squad identified the man as Anthony Noto, 37 years old, of 149‐15 81 Street, How ard Beach, Queens. He was charged with grand larceny and possession of a forged in strument and is scheduled to be indicted this Friday. The police did not say how he was traced to the stolen checks.

A second man, Arnold Sher man, of 101‐34 95th Street, Ozone Park, Queens, was ar rested by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on July 19 for possession of stolen Citi bank travelers checks.

An international alarm has been sent out for the stolen checks. The alarm, which went to most check‐cashing establish ments in the world, said the serial numbers of the checks run from 521‐635‐001 through 521‐640‐000.
