And BET+ wants $9,99 a month for the privilege of watching the series (twice the cost of most other streaming services.) Rape is the number one plot device. There’s no character development. The acting feels adlibbed. First, woman (not Ruth) goes on her own to investigate after finding out her husband is being assigned there to look for a missing agent named Andrew. Once there she gets drugged and raped. Ends up in the hospital. Spends multiple episodes dreaming of going back because the violation was beautiful. Does anyone call the cops? No. Another woman, Tally, who is concealing her unauthorized pregnancy with Andrew (the under cover officer) is locked in a dirty trailer without water or a bathroom. Gets repeatedly beaten by men. Doesn’t try to escape. Main character Ruth beats Tally to prove her loyalty. Does it in front of children. Later, to be promoted to position of “elder”, Ruth is sent for a ceremony but objects to the “requirement” but then lies down to allow herself to be impregnated in a gang rape by seven men while the leader watches and demands she give him a daughter. Tally is back in the trailer (Why isn’t undercover Andrew not getting her out to protect their unborn child?) Ruth goes to trailer and promises Tally that Andrew didn’t go through with the rape. (Just the other six men did) While the first victim (can’t remember her name) continues to communicate secretly with a cult member to try to get invited back, her husband (who is law enforcement) is kept in the dark. She calls her assault magical when describing it to a friend. Meanwhile, Andrew’s wife tracks him down using a watch app. But only after discovering Andrew wiped out their savings while undercover. Broke, she goes to the cult compound (how is it a secret if everyone manages to find it???) and confronts Andrew. Andrew pretends not to know her (the dialogue is painful) and sends her away saying her being there puts him in danger. She leaves and tells his boss she didn’t mess up his assignment. No one is the wiser. But lo and behold her purse had been searched and the cult now has the tracker and a photo from her wallet of Andrew with her and their son (cover blown? Of course not.) I stopped at episode 6. Regret not stopping at episode 1. Whoever made this mess has anger issues and no screenwriting skills. Don’t say you weren’t warned. Zero stars for lazy script, direction, and acting.
