Instagram is constantly changing, pivoting from pics to TikTok-esque videos, letting you hide likes (if you want to), and even introducing subscriber-only content on the app.

Still, you can enjoy scrolling through photographs on your feed or watch Instagram Stories or Reels – and, if you really want to, take a screenshot of the content.

Perhaps you’ve seen a recipe you want to try, or an outfit you feel inspired by, and want to save it.

If you’re going to do this, though, it’s worth knowing exactly whether or not it will trigger the user who is being screenshotted getting a notification of some kind.

Some platforms immediately tell users if their content has been screengrabbed, while Meta-owned Instagram has different rules.

So, what are they?

No, people will not get notified if you screenshot their Instagram Story.

One of the benefits of Instagram is that a sneaky screenshot of someone’s Story or Reel can go totally unnoticed.

This is true of a celebrity with a huge account or even just a pal with a few trusted followers.

However, this goes for you too. If someone screenshots your Story, you’ll also be none the wiser about it.

The same goes for Instagram posts on the main feed, or viewed on someone’s profile.

Crucially, Instagram will notify someone of screenshot activity in one instance.

If you capture a picture or video sent via Instagram’s direct message function in a screenshot, the person who sent you the content will be informed that you’ve screengrabbed.

So, just be aware…

  • Does Instagram Notify Users When You Screenshot A Post Or Story?

Instagram gives its users a way to review who takes screenshots of the photos and videos they share, but it's not available everywhere in the app.

Instagram Screenshot Notification

Instagram users may sometimes find the desire to screenshot a post or story shared by someone, but might be worried about the other user being notified. Most Instagram users who screenshot content on the app would rather do it discreetly without the original poster knowing. The idea of someone potentially discovering that their content — some of it designed to go away after 24 hours — has been captured for saving and future perusal can be awkward and rather embarrassing.

This concern is not uncommon. It is most likely brought on by the fact that Snapchat is widely known to have the feature that lets users check who screenshots their posts. Since Instagram's Story feature is very similar to the way Snapchat works, users might be wondering if reviewing screenshots is possible on the photo-sharing app.

Instagram first started testing the feature that alerted users of screenshot activity in stories in February 2018, but officially ended the rollout in June 2018. Now, people can only tell who has seen their Instagram stories and the number of times users have viewed videos and Reels. However, Instagram currently doesn't inform users when screenshots are taken of their stories. There is also no way of tracking who screenshots posts that appear on the main Instagram feed.

Screenshot Notifications Inside DMs

Instagram Screenshot Notification Details

People who may want screenshot notifications to be on Instagram for security purposes may be disappointed by this lack of the feature in the app. But the good news is it does exist elsewhere on the platform, specifically in Instagram direct messages (DM), both in one-on-one and group conversations. Taking a screenshot of text conversations within the Messages folder does not trigger a notification on the other person's Instagram account. However, the same cannot be said for disappearing photos or videos sent via DM. To take a disappearing Instagram photo or video, open a DM thread in the Messages inbox and tap the camera icon on the bottom-left corner of the page. After capturing the photo or video, choose either 'View Once' or 'Allow Replay' from the time limit options below before hitting 'Send'.

When the recipient of a disappearing photo or video takes a screenshot, a starburst icon will appear next to the captured media. Users can also see the exact time the screenshot was taken by long-pressing on the photo or video and tapping 'Details'. For group DMs, 'Details' will let a user know which among the recipients took a screenshot. This is primarily a safety feature to ensure potentially sensitive content shared on Instagram isn't misused.
