Delhi Amritsar Katra Highway Project BriefThe NHAI’s 669-kilometer Delhi Amritsar Katra (DAK) expressway project (NE-5 & NE-5A) which is under Bharatmala Pariyojana connects Jasaur Kheri, Jhajjar District near Delhi, with Katra, north of Jammu city. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this brownfield and greenfield Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway project was completed in year 2019. Despite the fact that bidding process is underway, this mega expressway project is now being hampered by land acquisition issues in Punjab State, where the farmers and land owners are demanding higher compensation for their farmland. The first phase entails the construction of a 397.7-kilometer greenfield expressway connecting Delhi, Ludhiana, and Gurdaspur, as well as a 99-kilometer branch or Spur expressway route connecting Nakodar and Amritsar. It has been divided into 15 construction tenders / sections with a two-year deadline.
Phase 2 will be a brownfield expansion of the existing NH-54 (former NH-15) and NH-44 (old NH-1) highways, connecting Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Jammu, and Katra. However, at some locations protest against compensation and other issues have been observed & Negotiations are in progress with the farmers and land owners to resolve the issue. Design and Alignment / Route Map of Delhi Amritsar Katra ExpresswaysFeedback Infrastructure developed the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and alignment studies for the Delhi – Amritsar – Katra Expressway in 2019, and land acquisition began in January 2020. Phase 1 will run from Jhajjar’s Kundli Manesar Palwal Expressway (KMP) near Kheri Jasaur hamlet to Gurdaspur’s Gurdaspur Bypass (Chainage 397+712). Its greenfield Nakodar – Amritsar spur runs from Nakodar hamlet, where the Delhi – Katra Expressway intersects with NH 703 (former NH 71) (Expressway Km 306), to Amritsar-Ajnala Road NH 354 near Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar. The expressway will run through Haryana’s Jhajjar, Rohtak, Sonipat, Jind, Karnal, and Kaithal districts, as well as Punjab’s Patiala, Sangrur, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, and Gurdaspur districts. Phase 1 (all greenfield) is made up of 15 packages, each with a deadline of 24 months (2 years). There are 12 packages on the main Delhi-Gurdaspur Expressway, and three on the Nakodar-Amritsar spur.
