Well, if it's easy I may go ahead and do them. I've never had to replace something like this before, but I guess I'll learn how, right.

most place i have seen is about $150 to install a a pair of rotters and a pair or pads. plus they will charge about $75 a rotor and over $50 for the pads. you can probably get rotor and pads at a auto store for under $100 and spend the time learning if you have the space and fell OK doing it. if you a have a friend that has worked on cars ask for him to just join you and help if needed.

its really just lift the end you want to start on, remove the wheel, take off the 2 bolts holding the caliber on, remove the pads from it, push the cylinders in the caliber back using a c-clamp (open break fluid revers and put a towel around it), put puds on, remove old rotor, clean and wipe the new rotor with break clean, put new rotor on, bolt the caliber back on, put wheel back one and lower the car.

just a quick sum of what is need to be done. invest in a service book for $25 and has decent info in there with good info for starting to learn.

Yep do it yourself it feels great to learn first hand how to do stuff! So much cheaper just buying parts too. Get a Haynes or Chiltons manual and you'll be set.

I just happened to have the receipt from an old brake job at the Jeep dealership laying here.

They charged $108 labor to install 2 rotors ($150), and "shoe kit" ($60).

So grand total of $318 for front brakes and rotors.

wearever rotors from advance also. been running a set on my friends XJ for 2 years and theyre doing great. The wearever rotors are decent price too. oh and to further elaborate on the installation, if your rotors have never been changed before, there will be little locking clips on 2 of the wheel studs on each wheel. you will need to break them off with pliers to get rotor off, dont worry about replacing them, they are not needed

how wavy can the surface of the rotors get before they need to be replaced? I've heard conflicting opinions on this.

Rotors are like $25 a piece. When in doubt just replace them.

Definitely a DIY job. Not hard at all. You can invest a little more into better quality as well and still come out cheaper than having someone else put garbage brakes on for you.

The smoother the better! Grooves in the rotor will cause your brake shoes to wear out unevenly and/or prematurely.

Run your finger radially across the shiny braking surface and see how it feels. If it feels smooth like a beer can, you should be fine. If it feels like the surface of a nickel, I'd say get new ones.

By far one of the easiest jobs to DYI. I would also state that I change my rotors every other pad replacement. I also have them turned by O'Riely the other time.

yes they should be smooth but theres other things to watch out for too. look for the color, if their smooth, shiny and still are a silver color, theyre good. Some rotors can get damaged by cheap pads and get "glazed". you can tell this by looking at the shiny surface, if it looks like it has little rainbows of color in it, sort of an iridescence, they should be turned or replaced. you can get rotors turned almost any parts store, some free but shouldnt be more than $6 a set.

If you can change a tire you can replace pads and rotors.

I would opt for premium pads from someplace like NAPA. Even better, get Hawk HPS pads. They are well worth it.

So what about rotors?

What are the good and bad ones I should look for, are they all created equally?

Does it really matter which ones I get?

Get some drilled rotors. I would if I could do it all again.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and get good pads. I bought the cheapest ones they had (BrakeBest) and there is dust everywhere... Doesn't clean off easily either

stillen has a deal on their website STILLEN : Truck Specials! that you get pads free when you buy the Sport Rotors (cross-drilled or slotted). nick (the great kolak) recommends them on WJ's and most people like them. also theirs free shipping if you looking for something a bit above a basic sets of pads and rotors. and there rotors have a lifetime warranty.

i did the math for my WJ's front pads and rotors and it would cost an extra $50 instead of going to auto zone and getting their basics pads and rotors.
$213.79 (stillen) vs $162 (AZ)
