The Clerk of the Circuit Court is a Constitutional Officer elected every eight years. The Campbell County Clerk of the Circuit Court is Valerie P. Younger.
The Clerk’s Office is responsible for recording the following items:
- Deeds
- Deeds of trust
- Mechanics liens
- Plats
- Other miscellaneous instruments on the land record books
The Clerk’s Office also assists in the docketing of judgments and the filing of financial statements under the Uniform Commercial Code.
The Clerk’s Office files and processes all law and chancery suits including the following:
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Divorces
- Injunctions
- Land partitions
- Appeals from the General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts
- Adoption proceedings
- Name changes
Other duties of the Clerk’s Office include the following:
- Issuance of marriage licenses
- Processing indictments for both felony and misdemeanor cases
- Jury scheduling
- Probating wills
- Appointing administrators, trustees, and guardians
- Collecting fines and costs for the 24th Judicial Circuit Court of Virginia
Most records of this office (with certain exceptions) are open to the public.
The General District Court of the County of Campbell is part of the 24th Judicial District of Virginia. It decides all criminal offenses involving ordinances, laws, and by-laws of the County.
The General District Court also handles all misdemeanors under state law and hears cases in which a person is charged with a traffic offense.
It decides civil cases, both in the Small Claims Division up to $5,000, which cannot have an attorney involved, and in the Civil Division, in which the amount in question does not exceed $25,000.
The General District Court also holds preliminary hearings in felony cases to determine whether or not there is sufficient evidence to justify holding a defendant for a grand jury hearing.
All cases are heard by a judge.
