Breast cancer awareness bra decorating contest ideas

A unique fundraising experience

About us

The Bra-ha-ha® is a one-of-a-kind fundraising experience that celebrates survivorship and artistry. With a 38-C bra as their canvas, interested community members are challenged to construct unique and uplifting art using breast cancer prevention as inspiration.

These heartwarming masterpieces are unveiled at our annual Bra-ha-ha Awards Show and Auction, which serves as our tribute to those affected by breast cancer. The Bra-ha-ha encompasses a series of inspiring events including the Bra-ha-ha 5K Run/Walk, the Awards Show & Auction, a week-long bra art exhibit, and third party philanthropy events. All raise funds to improve breast healthcare and provide FREE mammograms to the area’s uninsured and underinsured population.

A contest at Kinkaider Brewing lent support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Businesses were invited to take part in a Bras for a Cause. The creatively decorated bras were hung in the bar and voted on by the public. Each vote cost $1, with the funds going to the local GRACE Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to Grand Island area families battling cancer.

The competition, which drew 14 entries, was the first of its kind at Kinkaider Brewing.

“We were just trying to look for something different to do to raise money for the GRACE Foundation and something fun to draw the community in,” said Delene Dilsaver, Kinkaider Brewing general manager.

The designs included one bra decorated in Hershey Kisses with a note that said “kiss cancer goodbye,” and another adorned with dozens of sugar cubes as a reminder to “keep the lumps out of your cups.”

Dilsaver said the competition was a fun way to draw attention to breast cancer awareness, which is observed every October.

“It sparks a conversation. People might think it’s odd in the beginning but when you tell them they smile and say that makes perfect sense. It’s a different way to get an important message across,” she said.

The month of October brings awareness to breast cancer, the second most common cancer among women behind skin cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

An event like the one at Kinkaider Brewing brings attention to the disease that one in eight women will develop in their lifetimes. Annually, it is estimated that more than 252,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and about 40,500 will die from the disease.

Voting began Friday and ran through Saturday evening, with the winner receiving a $100 gift card from Kinkaider. Final tabulations will be announced Tuesday by GRACE Cancer Foundation.

Along with collecting funds through the voting process, Kinkaider also raised money for GRACE by selling $1 beers during the week. Last year, the business sold 50-cent beers throughout the month of October as a fundraising effort collecting about $2,500. Dilsaver was hoping to raise at least that amount through the bra-decorating contest.

Sarah Koch, executive director of the GRACE Cancer Foundation, said she is thankful for the awareness the event raised.

“We would like to send a very special thank you to Kinkaider and the area businesses that participated in this year’s first annual Kinkaider’s Bras for a Cause event,” she said.

“Because of the generosity and compassion of the Grand Island community, we can continue to positively impact the lives of cancer patients and their families in the area.”
