Good Omens is a fantastical comedy from the creative minds of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Based on the novel of the same name by Gaiman and Pratchett, this show stars David Tennant, Michael Sheen, and Frances McDormand.

Good Omens tells the story of the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale. The two have grown close over the years as they both have enjoyed their lives on Earth and they both have taken a liking towards humans. As the end times grow nearer, the two hatch a half-baked plan to prevent the Apocalypse from happening in order to continue their cushy lives and to save the humans. This involves keeping an eye on the Antichrist, whom they believe to be a son of an American diplomat living in England. Yet, they quickly realize that there was a mix-up upon attending the 11th birthday party of the Antichrist. When no hellhound appears, they decide to track down the real deal. At the same time, it’s revealed that the true Antichrist is a young boy named Adam Young, who named his hellhound “Dog” and triggers the Apocalypse.

With only one season under its belt, Good Omens premiered on May 31, 2019, from Amazon Studios. This fantasy-comedy proved to be a thoroughly entertaining and faithful adaptation of the novel it's based upon and it also featured strong acting from its superstar leads. All in all, it’s certainly one of the best TV shows on Amazon Prime.

Good Omens 1

Transparent is an emotional and moving comedy-drama created by Joey Soloway. Starring Jeffrey Tambor, Amy Landecker, and Gaby Hoffman, the show went on to win the Golden Globe for Best TV Series and Best Actor, and a Primetime Emmy for Best Lead Actor. These were historic wins for Amazon as they were the first major win for the streaming service and the first streaming media show to win a Golden Globe for Best TV Series.

Transparent is based on creator Joey Soloway’s own experiences with her father’s transition. The show follows Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman who is transitioning and attempting to find ways to share the news with her three children and her ex-wife. The show also explores the lives of Maura’s family members and their own struggles. Maura is friendly with her ex-wife Shelly, and it’s revealed that the two divorced after Maura shared her true gender identity with Shelly. After Shelly remarried, the two eventually grew closer and have become friends. Each of Maura’s children is going through their own relationship issues, with the eldest child Sarah considering leaving her husband for a woman she’d had a relationship with during college. Meanwhile, Josh and Ali, the middle and youngest children, are struggling with various relationships and flings.

Transparent debuted on February 6, 2014, from Amazon Studios and went on to have four seasons and a “musicale finale” film, which was released in 2019. With strong writing that covered important issues relating to trans individuals, this show was helpful in educating some mainstream audiences. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the casting of Jeffrey Tambor and his sexual harassment accusations overshadowed much of the good work of the show and the rest of the cast.

Jack Ryan 1

For the uninitiated, The Boys isn’t exactly the most family-friendly show in town. In fact, it is probably one of the least family-friendly shows in Amazon Prime’s library. However, that isn’t a bad thing by any means. And in the process, it actually blows wind in the sails of the superhero genre all the while telling a unique and interesting story to boot.

The Boys centers all around a few different character, at the center of which are Butchie and Homelander. Butchie is more or less a mercenary bound and determined to defeat all superheroes (“supes” as they’re called in this show) and protect his deceased wife’s illegitimate son, whom she had with Homelander—a disgusting, egotistical superhero who perfectly captures what exactly a superhero would be like if they let the love and fame go to their head. Indeed, Homelander provides an excellent view at a superhero who has a fragile ego and is otherwise an evil version of Superman. Antony Starr’s portrayal of this character is darn near pitch perfect and deserving of an award in and of itself.

Otherwise, in a genre that is brimming with derivative or otherwise unremarkable content, The Boys continually innovates the anti-superhero genre with ample gore, offensive jokes, terrific performances, and a plot that will have viewers captivated the whole way through. Any Prime subscriber would be doing themselves a disservice by not watching this show at least once.

Key Features

  • About a group of mercenaries set to defeat superheroes ("supes"), not venerate them
  • First aired in 2019
  • Stars Antony Starr, Karl Urban, etc.
  • Derived from a graphic novel of the same name

Specifications

  • Seasons: 3
  • Franchise: The Boys
  • Main Characters: Homelander, Butchie
  • Production Company: Amazon

Pros

  • Gore is excellent
  • Humor is well-timed
  • Interesting story
  • Homelander is truly villainous

Cons

  • Not for the faint of heart

The Boys (1)

While it seems like we've had Netflix for forever, Amazon Prime's original programming is relatively new by comparison. To better understand the offerings of the streaming service, we should take a look at its history and the types of TV shows that are available.

History of TV Shows on Amazon Prime

While Amazon Prime Video has its roots all the way back in 2006, they didn't start getting into the original programming game like their major rival Netflix until 2013. It was then that two comedies premiered called Alpha House and Betas. While the service premiered the first three episodes at the same time on the streaming service, they later leaned towards the method of a typical network TV show and released further episodes on a weekly basis.

A handful of other shows premiered the following year, but Amazon Prime really hit their stride with Transparent in 2014. The show would go on to be lauded by critics, even winning two Golden Globes and an Emmy. The show not only won Amazon its first major award, but also made history as the first show produced by a streaming service to win a Golden Globe for Best Series.

After Transparent, Amazon Prime released a steady stream of other shows that won the hearts of critics and audiences, including Mozart in the Jungle (2014), Red Oaks (2015), One Mississippi (2016), and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017).

Types of TV Shows on Amazon Prime

While Amazon Prime has released a variety of shows that fall under a variety of genres, its two richest categories are comedy and drama.

Comedies were what garnered the most attention to the streaming service originally, especially comedy-dramas. While it also tested the waters of science-fiction comedies, superhero comedies, and fantasy comedies, the classic comedy-dramas have seemed to go over the best with audiences and critics.

Dramas have been successful as well for Amazon Prime, and they seem to best fill the niche of legal dramas and crime dramas previously exclusively reserved for major cable networks like NBC and HBO. Shows with superstar male leads like Bosch, Goliath, and Jack Ryan have proven to be some of the most popular, though the streaming service has more recently tried to branch out into superhero and fantasy genres with shows like The Boys and Carnival Row.

What's fascinating about these types of shows is that Amazon Prime understands that it can't do all the same things that other networks and services are doing. It isn't trying to make the next Game of Thrones or The Sopranos or Stranger Things. Instead, it's focusing on filling niches and bringing audiences elevated versions of TV show formulas that they know and love. It takes the family comedy and crime drama genres of cable networks like NBC and CBS and makes them its own.

All in all, there are more great TV shows on Amazon Prime than those that made this list. While we know it's hard to tear your eyes away from Netflix, it's worth the exploration into another streaming service that offers top-quality shows with unique twists.
