Transparent is an emotional and moving comedy-drama created by Joey Soloway. Starring Jeffrey Tambor, Amy Landecker, and Gaby Hoffman, the show went on to win the Golden Globe for Best TV Series and Best Actor, and a Primetime Emmy for Best Lead Actor. These were historic wins for Amazon as they were the first major win for the streaming service and the first streaming media show to win a Golden Globe for Best TV Series. Transparent is based on creator Joey Soloway’s own experiences with her father’s transition. The show follows Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman who is transitioning and attempting to find ways to share the news with her three children and her ex-wife. The show also explores the lives of Maura’s family members and their own struggles. Maura is friendly with her ex-wife Shelly, and it’s revealed that the two divorced after Maura shared her true gender identity with Shelly. After Shelly remarried, the two eventually grew closer and have become friends. Each of Maura’s children is going through their own relationship issues, with the eldest child Sarah considering leaving her husband for a woman she’d had a relationship with during college. Meanwhile, Josh and Ali, the middle and youngest children, are struggling with various relationships and flings. Considered a semi-autobiographical story of Tig Notaro’s life, this show stars Tig Notaro, John Rothman, and Noah Harpster. One Mississippi follows Tig Bavaro, a Los Angeles radio host who is simultaneously going through breast cancer and dealing with the impending death of her mother, Caroline, who is being taken off life support following a fall. Tig returns to her hometown of Bay St. Lucille, Mississippi to say goodbye to her mother and to reconnect with her stepfather and brother. Though Tig’s girlfriend Brooke arrives from Los Angeles for the funeral and to support her, Tig ultimately decides to stay in town. Tig recovers from both a double mastectomy and a C. difficile infection and begins going through her mother’s possessions, discovering that her mother had another son out of wedlock. As Tig settles in to Mississippi life, she begins recording her show at a local radio station and meets a local sound engineer. Her relationship with Brooke suffers and Tig ultimately decides to stay in her hometown in the hopes of learning more about her mother’s life and about herself. One Mississippi debuted on November 5, 2015, from Amazon Studios and was canceled after two seasons on the streaming service. Goliath is a gritty legal drama created by David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro. Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Tania Raymonde, and Nina Arianda, this show won Thornton a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a TV Series Drama. Goliath follows Billy McBride, an ambulance-chaser and alcoholic. We’re introduced to his former partner and the firm he helped build, which is extremely powerful and successful. To add insult to injury, employed at this firm is Billy’s ex-wife. Billy goes toe-to-toe with his former firm when he is asked by a colleague to represent her neighbor in a wrongful death suit. The plaintiff is the sister of a man who supposedly committed suicide on a company boat, while the defendant is a technology company represented by Billy’s old firm. Billy investigates and finds himself reinvigorated and with renewed purpose: to go after the rich and powerful who think themselves above the law. Although he is followed, threatened, and even beat up, Billy refuses to back down on his mission. He quickly learns, however, that his opponent has powerful friends who will stop at nothing to prevent him from discovering their dirty secrets. Goliath debuted on October 14, 2016, from Amazon Studios and went on to have three seasons, with a fourth and final season announced to be in the works in November 2019. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows Midge Maisel, a housewife who discovers a knack for stand-up comedy after observing her husband and his regular gigs at the local Gaslight Cafe. In retaliation, Midge drunkenly takes the stage at the Gaslight and bashes her husband in a smash-hit stand-up routine. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Mozart in the Jungle is a refreshing and dramatic music comedy created by Alex Timbers, Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Paul Weitz. Starring Gael Gracia Bernal, Lola Kirke, and Saffron Burrows, this show was inspired by Blair Tindall's 2005 memoir of the same name. Mozart in the Jungle follows the lives of a group of musicians for an orchestra in New York. The orchestra is undergoing a major leadership transition, whereby retired conductor Thomas is being replaced by a young hotshot named Rodrigo. Equally disappointed by the transition is the uptight orchestra board head, Gloria. Rodrigo proves to be wild and eccentric and it's also revealed that Thomas doesn’t want to retire. However, both must move on and fulfill their duties. We are also introduced to Hailey, a young oboist who is training dutifully to someday perform with the orchestra. After she impresses Rodrigo at her audition, she is added to the orchestra and quickly bonds with a cellist named Cynthia. The show also faithfully reveals how demanding and difficult it is to be a classic musician and the types of jobs that they work between working for the orchestra. Mozart in the Jungle debuted on February 6, 2014, from Amazon Studios and would go on to have four seasons, before being canceled by Amazon in April 2018. Red Oaks is a laugh-out-loud 80s sex comedy from the creative minds of Joe Gangemi and Gregory Jacobs. Starring Craig Roberts, Ennis Esmer, and Oliver Cooper, this show is both familiar in its premise and also a refreshing comedic take on the genre. Red Oaks is set in the 1980s and follows David Myers, a college student who finds a summer job working as an assistant tennis pro at a Jewish country club in New Jersey. The show revolves entirely around the Red Oaks Country Club and involves subplots surrounding David’s family and friends, including his father Sam, mother Judy, girlfriend Karen, and co-workers Wheeler and Misty. David immediately befriends Nash, his tennis supervisor, yet he accidentally upsets the president of the country club, Mr. Getty, after David beats him in a tennis match. He also learns that he is being pursued by Mr. Getty’s daughter, which he has to deal with. Starring Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne, and Simon McBurney, the show was released with much fanfare and excitement regarding the all-star cast. Carnival Row follows a group of magical creatures who have immigrated from their conflicted homeland to a city where tensions run high between the citizens and the new immigrants. As this conflict is investigated, a string of crimes against the magical creatures is also explored. We meet Vignette Stonemoss, a fae who escaped her land on a ship with other fae-folk. After a storm hits, it’s revealed that Vignette is the only survivor of the shipwreck. We also meet Ezra Spurnrose, a rich man who owned the ship and lives with his sister in an upper-class neighborhood. He meets Vignette and expects her to work as a maid for his sister. Vignette explores the Carnival Row district and meets an old friend who reveals that her lover is alive and working as a police officer investigating attacks on fae-folk. Her lover discovers that the attacker is a sailor and chases him down, only for him to kill himself while declaring that a dark god is taking over the underground of the city. Carnival Row debuted on August 30, 2019, from Amazon Studios and has only had one season on the air, though it was renewed for a second in July of 2019. Bosch is a serious and sophisticated crime drama created by Eric Ellis Overmyer. Starring Titus Welliver, Jamie Hector, and Amy Aquino, the show was inspired by a series of novels by Michael Connelly. Bosch follows Harry Bosch, a former Army operative who works as a detective in the Hollywood homicide unit. We learn that Bosch shot a suspect in an alley after he saw him reaching into his pocket and is now being sued by the family in a wrongful death civil suit. It’s unclear based on flashbacks whether Bosch planted a gun or whether the suspect did have something in his hand that then fell into a puddle. Despite the circumstances, Bosch is cleared by the department and allowed to go back to work on restricted duty. Bosch trades shifts with other detectives so that he can see more action, and stumbles upon a case of a doctor whose son’s dog found a human bone in the woods. An investigation reveals that the bone belonged to a small boy and that the boy has been dead since 1989. The boy had been horribly beaten and abused, with more than 40 bones broken in his body. Bosch must investigate the death and is drawn to a serial killer who confesses to the crime, who repeatedly taunts Bosch. Bosch debuted on February 6, 2014, from Amazon Studios and has since premiered six seasons, with a seventh and final season announced on February 13, 2020. Starring John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce, and John Hoogenakker, the show is based on the famous character of the same name by Tom Clancy. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan follows the titular character, who works for the CIA at a relatively safe and boring desk job. After discovering a suspicious string of bank transfers that he brings to the attention of his new superior, he is able to make a connection to the ever-elusive Islamic terrorist by the name of Suleiman. The first season follows the cat-and-mouse game between the CIA and Suleiman, with the latter seemingly always one step ahead. Yet, as he grows bolder and bolder, Suleiman makes more and more mistakes, which help Jack Ryan and his team to create a stronger case that forces the CIA to intervene before Suleiman can enact his evil plans, which target the President and Vice President of the United States. After the first season conflict is wrapped up in the season finale, the second season follows a new plotline of a promoted Ryan pursuing a new case involving the corrupt President of Venezuela. For the uninitiated, The Boys isn’t exactly the most family-friendly show in town. In fact, it is probably one of the least family-friendly shows in Amazon Prime’s library. However, that isn’t a bad thing by any means. And in the process, it actually blows wind in the sails of the superhero genre all the while telling a unique and interesting story to boot. The Boys centers all around a few different character, at the center of which are Butchie and Homelander. Butchie is more or less a mercenary bound and determined to defeat all superheroes (“supes” as they’re called in this show) and protect his deceased wife’s illegitimate son, whom she had with Homelander—a disgusting, egotistical superhero who perfectly captures what exactly a superhero would be like if they let the love and fame go to their head. Indeed, Homelander provides an excellent view at a superhero who has a fragile ego and is otherwise an evil version of Superman. Antony Starr’s portrayal of this character is darn near pitch perfect and deserving of an award in and of itself. Otherwise, in a genre that is brimming with derivative or otherwise unremarkable content, The Boys continually innovates the anti-superhero genre with ample gore, offensive jokes, terrific performances, and a plot that will have viewers captivated the whole way through.
