Hi guys.... Trying to figure out the best way to a better sounding Hemi:thumbsup:

All this relates to catback....I don't want to get into emissions issues or messing with manifolds etc

Now over here in the UK, choice is pretty limited, in that there's next to nothing available off the shelf..... Best I can come up with is a magnflow cat back and that works out at around $920 US dollars.....unfitted

So I can go custom, as I did on my old wj (still going strong)

But if I do go custom, what should I be telling the manufacturers.?? What size tube is best??
Do I just replace the main muffler??
Do I get rid of the rear resonator??

Any help and advice will be much appreciated

If I hadn't gotten a complete steal on my Gibson catback, I'd have simply had the stock muffler replaced with a 3" Magnaflow. Any decent shop can do that no problem, very minimal tubing work to be done.

If that wasn't loud enough, I'd go back and have the stock resonator cut off even though it doesn't hamper flow at all.

What he said ^^^^ swap to a muffler of your choice. and tell them to delete the resonator and run 3" tube from muffler back. I think OEM is 2.75" so you will get a little more flow. You could start at cat and go 3" all the way... should work out to half the price of a gibson system.

I have the MagnaFlow cat-back system. It's 2.5" pipe. After a couple of months of trails, I deleted the resonator in favour of a straight 3.5" scavenger pipe. It gave it a bit more of a growl. If you can get a system built and use the Magnaflow muffler, mine is 5"x 11"x 22", it should have a good sound. A 3" pipe system should also be nice for airflow.

i was debating for a while on which exhaust to get and I'm glad i went with Gibson, it has a nice ROAR but not obnoxious. if you want something louder and can deal with the Drone inside the cabin go with a magna flow or RPB?

also if you want your hemi to roar get an intake

Thanks for the clarification, I might have had my exhausts mixed up.

I have the 22" magnaflow. And Wish I went with the 18".
22" does have a good sound when you floor it.

This hasn't been my experience, although I can't speak directly to the Hemi. I put a Dynomax Turbo muffler on my 4.7L WJ (same style as a Magnaflow) and got minor increases in overall sound levels, and what was louder was primarily just drone. Same case with the Borla I had on a different car. I replaced it with a Flowmaster 70, which had more sound in the lower end, but had no drone. This is because the chambered/baffled design does a much better job of cancelling out the annoying frequencies while still leaving in the high pitched frequencies that make a V8 sound extra good (imo).

Magnaflow, Borla, Dynomax, and others will sound similar because they use fiberglass packing to muffle sound. It ends up similar to the sound you hear through a wall in a house when someone is watching a movie next door. The vocals and treble are gone, and all you hear is the low/mid-bass. This is the biggest contributor to drone. But these flow the best as the exhaust flow is not impeded by protuberances.

Flowmaster uses baffles and chambers to redirect sound waves to collide with each other, cancelling out frequencies, kind of like noise cancelling headphones. They engineer (certain lines, namely the quieter ones) to focus on the mid bass frequencies but leaves some of the raspiness that gives them that aggressive growl that you get with straight pipes at a reduced volume. These flow worse than the former because of the baffles redirecting flow, but are still much better than stock.

Gibson are a bit of a mix of the above, using the ideals behind the first, and chamber design from the second. These (like flowmaster) don't use any packing material, so they don't change sound as they age, flow better than flowmaster (because they don't use baffles) but worse than magnaflow (because they do use chambers), and sound somewhere in between, but don't get nearly as quiet as the other two options CAN get.

I'm very happy the guy at my local exhaust shop talked me into the 18" instead of the 22" (or maybe 24"?) Magnaflow I was leaning towards. I have no resonator and experience a little drone at around 2000 RPM's in 2nd gear but nothing too bad.

Is there any performance / mileage increase going to a 3" cat-back?

Does the resonator help prevent drone?

I was leaning toward a Flowmaster Super 50 series (Former 50 SUV) for my 5.7l Hemi XK. Anyone with experience in that setup?

With the the flowmaster I'm sure you will want to keep the resonator on.

had that on my 4.7 and it was so loud and the drone was so obnoxious that I didn't even think of putting it on my 5.7. But it all depends on what kind of sound you are going for honestly.
