Amazon prime rewards visa signature card credit limit increase

Hi all, thought I'd write this up so we have another data point.

Last night, I was approved for the Amazon Rewards card at $5000. The cardmember agreement showed 719 EX. This morning, I called the EO, explained that I was looking for more, and was transferred to customer service. The rep. informed me 1) that my credit limit was actually 6.5K (it seems common that your CL with Chase is higher than what Amazon initially shows you...), and 2) that an increase request would require another hard pull. He then asked for my income (150K+), how long I'd been at my job (first time I've been asked this!), and how much I wanted. Nervous, I said 9K. He put me on hold, came back, asked my rent and why I wanted the increase (refurnishing the apartment, heavy Prime user), put me on hold again for ~5 seconds, and came back with an instant approval. The whole thing took around 5 minutes, and I ended up wishing that I'd asked for more. But still -- success!

I actually think that a couple things may have helped here. First, I use all my cards heavily and PIF with multiple payments each month. Seriously, it would take me a while to find my debit card if I needed it right now. Second, I went into the whole thing with 2 inquiries -- so knew that 4 altogether wouldn't hurt me. Third, while avoiding my actual responsibilities yesterday, I'd decided to get some APR reductions and kind of went on a credit-tweaking spree. I called Discover, got a rate reduction on my IT, was offered a small CLI, and took it. I also got a promo rate reduction on my AMEX BCE -- 0% for 12 months -- but declined to take an offer to upgrade to the BCP. I requested a CLI for 2 of my CapOne cards and got hit with the 2-3 day message on both. I expected this, since I had a 30 day late with CapOne last year (3 baddies across all cards altogether, one of which is falling off in 3 months), but it still frustrated me enough that I chatted customer service and rage quit my oldest (7+y), unsecured card, which had a measly $750 credit limit and which they consistently refused to secure. Closing it was scary but felt good. And surely enough, the Amazon credit agreement mentioned "LENGTH OF TIME SINCE THE OLDEST CREDIT CARD ESTABLISHED" as a key factor that adversely affected my credit score. Still though, the Discover CLI made up for it, and I think the higher average credit limit may have made me look a bit more appealing in the new request this morning.

(I also got CapOne to upgrade my Journey student rewards card to a Quicksilver! It was incredibly easy -- also via chat -- and as I understand it, Quicksilver has more growth potential than the Journey.)

I definitely haven't been focusing on credit over the past couple years, so I'm gardening from now on. Will ask for 24K on the BCE when 3X cli is available; will request Discover CLI every 2 weeks or so, as these forums suggest; will use the Amazon card responsibly and pay in full, awaiting the common 4mo and rare 9mo auto-CLIs; and will request CLIs on my CapOnes periodically, though they'll probably never grant them because of that baddie.

Anyway, ask and ye shall receive, folks! If you can afford the second hard pull, go for the higher starting credit line.

Chase quietly gave surprise credit limit increases to many people on their Chase Amazon credit cards. Some cardholders are seeing their credit lines having been automatically increased by double the initial limit or even triple, quadruple, or more.

There’s some speculation that this is related to the fact that Chase is courting Amazon to keep them as their card issuer, as Amazon has been considering a break-up.
