damaged key

Hello all, I replaced my starter today in my '09 laredo, now the doors unluck and the jeep starts, but If i try using the remote start, I get "damaged key" notification on the message center, could I have damaged something by disconnecting the battery?

Need a little help here, did a little searching and did not find much, but here's what's up. My commander is a 2008 with the 3.7 I drove the Jeep last night with no issues, went out this afternoon and would not start. When I put the key in the ignition I get a quick flash on the EVIC display saying damaged key. I figured I smashed the key or something, but it did lock and unlock and the remote start works. I went and got the other key and get the same results as the other key.

I also disconnected the battery for 15 minutes to see if that could have been the issue.

I really doubt that both keys went bad on the same day. Has anyone else had this issue? Not look forward to having to sink a lot of money into a lot of repairs

Shouldn't you have a pair of keys? If so, what EVIC writes when you try to use the other one?

Sounds as if you have a switch problem. The skim module (or whatever it is called in an 08) seems to be working since you can lock/unlock the doors and use the remote start.

The Key and the Remote in the Key are two separate systems. The Key has an RFID chip in it that has nothing to do with the remote. Your remote battery can be 100% dead and you can use the key blade hidden in it to open the door and the key will still start the vehicle, because the RFID chip just has to be present.

RFID chips are engergized by RF energy, its possible to burn out an RFID chip if you expose it to too strong of an RF field. Did you put your key through and Xray machine? Stand by a 50k watt radio antenna or something like that? Is your key physically damaged? Could you've had cracked the rfid chip?

Or, the ignition module is going bad. Like already suggested, if you get the same reaction with the second key, then the common variable is the ignition module. But, if the 2nd key works fine, then the most likely variable is the key.

What does a key with a line through it mean on a jeep?

That the engine turns over during starting, is called cranking. In your case it cranks, but doesn´t start.
