CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.

From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.

By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

14 Cruise Control problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/11/2019

The incident occurred on or about Thursday, April 10th 2019 at 12:10am. It involves the brakes of the vehicle not being able to stop the vehicle at low speeds. The entire incident was captured on a high-quality front-facing dashboard camera with audio, video, and gps. There were no injuries. Description of the incident is as follows: while I was on the interstate 10 west freeway in redlands, CA, I maneuvered to the most right lane on the highway in preparation to approach an exit less than 1 mile away (university Ave. ) due to lane closures (left lanes) at the time I was on the freeway, traffic was bumper-to-bumper and very low speed. While in the most right lane and still at very low speed, I engaged the adaptive cruise control feature on the vehicle. Within around 5 seconds of engaging the adaptive cruise control, the vehicle slowed down to a stop because of the vehicle in front of mine had stopped. At that point, the cruise control feature self-disengaged as normal. Only a few seconds later, the vehicle possibly abnormally vibrated. As the vehicle continued to creep forward in traffic as normal, I applied the brakes to stop, but the vehicle would not stop or slow down. As I nearly approached colliding with the vehicle ahead of me, I engaged the parking/emergency brake with my foot, and that did not seem to slow or stop the vehicle either. A second attempt to engage the parking brake did nothing as well. Within a few seconds, the car almost slowed to a stop due to rolling friction and a slight uphill grade in that portion of the freeway. I placed the vehicle in park at this time and restarted the car. After restarting, I was able to drive and brake properly the rest of my short journey home. This entire episode is captured on my dashboard camera, and it seems others on the internet have complained about this issue as well.

15 Cruise Control problem of the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/17/2019

The gas pedal became stuck when I was driving around local streets. I was stopping my truck because I was coming up to an intersection. When I lifted my foot from the gas pedal it did not come up. Almost as if the cruise control was engaged. It was scary and I went a little too far into the intersection with my foot on the brake.

16 Cruise Control problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/05/2019

Driving my Grand Cherokee on I-40 with cruise control set to 75, I entered a construction zone and applied the brakes to slow down. Instead of slowing down, the car accelerated up to about 90 mph. I was speeding in and out of traffic like a mad person and, luckily, I managed to keep my wife and I alive. Then the brakes were on the floor, I could not disconnect the cruise control, could not shift out of gear and could not turn the car off. After a period of time, we began a slight incline and the car slowed. Then I had control for a short time when the power steering went out; it came back on after about a minute. We were towed to the nearest dealer (70 miles) and the car remained there in order for Chrysler to send a team to investigate. After 4 weeks Chrysler informed me that there was no problem. Tell the truth, I competely expected them to not take blame for this. This was the most frightening thing that has ever happened to me - I thought for sure that we would be killed - weaving in and out of diesel trucks and construction zone. I took out barriers and traffic cones in my effort to save us. I had serious concerns about operating this vehicle again but my thought is that Chrysler probably fixed the problem without taking responsibility for it. I did discover that there is something you can do if you are in this predicament and I wish I had known about it before. If you hold in on the start button for a few seconds, the car will turn off. I had held in on the start button but, evidently, not for long enough. I hope that this message can get out to other Jeep owners and that this action could save lives.

17 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/03/2019

Cruise control malfunctions with multiple issues. When vehicle is in motion on both highways or on city's streets, the cruise control will not engage most of the time. When it does engage, it will randomly turn off, turn itself on, decelerate, accelerate on it's own. In may of 2017 this same issue was address by the dealer under the warranty and I was assured it was fixed. Today, January 2019. I am starting to have a repeat of the same issues with the cruise control malfunctions of random deceleration, random accelerations or randomly turning off or on whail in motion. This is a daily reaccuance starting again on 1/3/2019. Now that the warranty is expired, the dealership larry miller of boise will require payment for diagnosis or repair of an obvious vehical safety issue that was addressed by them prior under warranty.

18 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

19 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

Vehicle exhibited sudden unintended acceleration on two separate occasions, and caused an accident involving property damage. The vehicle, which had been on cruise control, was completely stopped in traffic for 30-45 seconds on I-95 in south carolina. The car suddenly surged forward while the driver yelled at me my foot is on the brake. It subsided once, then surged ahead again, leaving skid marks and colliding with the vehicle in front of us. It then surged a third time, ploughing that car ahead, before the driver could shift the transmission into park.

21 Cruise Control problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/14/2018

1. Jeep dies for no reason when decelerating it happens at highway speeds when taking the foot of the gas it last happened on highway 1 on a big curve, steering and brakes lost power on a cliff side road. (scared me and the family 1/2 to death) it has happened on the dumbarton bridge in commute traffic it also happens when decelerating on off ramps or coasting to stop lights. You need to completely stop the car put it in park and press on the brake to restart it. This in traffic is also dangerous Jeep says 10 things may cause it and they will not fix try any of then because they cannot pinpoint which one it is. 2. Cruise control slams on the breaks for no reason. Another dangerous problem no cars in front of me, open highway, no overhead bridges or guard rails in sight and the brakes slam on.

22 Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

I am the original owner for 10 months. Several times over the last ten months, when stopped and then depressing the gas pedal fully without cruise control or launch control engaged, the throttle continues to accelerate even though my foot is removed fully from the gas pedal. It forces you to put the car in neutral and brake until the throttle becomes "unstuck" and the rpms of the engine come back down. I am mechanically inclined and have checked to see if the floor mat or something around the pedal or pedal mechanism was causing the pedal to be stuck but there are no indications of any mechanical interference. I have read from other owners who have had a similar issue with the high performance trims (srt and trackhawk) of the Grand Cherokee. Again cruise control and launch control were not activated in any way. I know there was a cruise control recall for throttle sticking but this is not being observed with the cruise control set or on. Is this perhaps a related issue ??.

25 Cruise Control problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/31/2018

On multiple occasions in the last few days, the brakes have failed to respond (extreme force is needed to push down on the brake pedal), which delays braking time/distance significantly. This is happening specifically when trying to disengage from cruise control. This almost caused a crash. The car had a break booster recall in 2017 and this repair was completed at that time.

26 Cruise Control problem of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/12/2018

Went to activate cruise control using the buttons on the steering wheel. Would not activate even after repeated attempts. Took it to dealer who exclaimed "recall" but after checking, he said the recall doesn't apply to my vehicle. Then found out other options do not work either. Plan on taking to a different dealer to have rechecked. This "defect happens whether moving or not. The failure nearly caused the contact's vehicle to be rear ended. New carlisle Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram - tobey auto group (580 n main st, new carlisle, OH 45344) required the contact to leave the vehicle for a couple of days with no guarantee of being diagnosed. 30 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/24/2018

We were using cruise control in our new Jeep. As we were approaching a red traffic light, we tried to disengage the cruise control by using the brake. The vehicle would not stop. The brakes were completely engaged and locked, but the vehicle kept moving forward into oncoming traffic. Thankfully, the driver of an 18 wheeler saw us unable to stop and swerved. His swerving and our steering caused us to be stopped by his hind wheel. If the other driver had noticed us one second slower, we would have likely been dead. There was $11,121. 91 worth of damage to our brand new Jeep with 3,500 miles on it. This Jeep is not yet part of the recall for the exact cruise control issue outlined. We are filing this, because we do not want another owner of this model to not be as lucky as us and we would like to not be out of pocket for the damages. Jeep flew someone down from michigan to check out the vehicle's black box and said they didn't find anything. We have the contact information of the truck driver who can attest that the brakes were fully engaged and the vehicle continued to move. We are fortunate to have all walked away unharmed physically, but the monetary pain cuts deep.

31 Cruise Control problem of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

In the process of parking at my sister's home, I took my foot off the accelerator and started to brake. The car did not slow down. I continued to brake, but the car kept going forward with increasing speed. I was able to steer and not hit parked cars, but went into the lawn hitting a set of contractor's scaffolding sending them flying into their house and patio. The car finally stopped on top of their well head, destroying the well cover as well as the protective pipe for the well head. Further internal damage was done to their well, as there was no running water in the house. A tow truck had to come to lift the car off the well head to avoid any further damage. I had been using the cruise control earlier in our trip, but it was not active at the time.

32 Cruise Control problem of the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/13/2018

My acc sensor will not connect therefore my cruise control does not work, leaving useless buttons on my steering wheel. We have no idea what is wrong with the whole system. Took it to the dealership and while they were doing recall work, they checked it. Said I would have to buy the $2,000+ acc unit and then it would probably be $1,000+ labor and then however much if they have to replace wires or anything else. I just want my cruise to work, I don't care if the distance part works. Warranty would not cover it and I'm sure I no longer have any factory warranty left on my vehicle.

33 Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/28/2018

While operating the SUV in cruise control, it was necessary to brake and re-accelerate while driving on the interstate. However, upon pushing the pedal to increase speed, it took between 10 to 20 seconds to increase the speed from just 60 mph to 70 mph. This happened repeatedly over a period of 30 miles. It was very concerning as I was not able to clear traffic properly. I stopped at a rest stop and tried to do the same acceleration from 0 mpg. This time however, the car hung at 5500 rpm's when I reached 75 mph. I had to move the gearshift into manual mode and back to and unhang it. I reported this to national rent-a-car upon my return. I want to make sure this is reported. I felt unsafe.

34 Cruise Control problem of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/26/2017

While driving on the highway using the cruise control, the car suddenly accelerated. The gas pedal was pinned to the floorboard. I attempted to disengage the cruise control by pressing down on the brake pedal. It did not disengage the cruise control leaving the car still accelerating in traffic up to and beyond 90 mph. I attempted to turn off the cruise control with the switch on the steering wheel but it did not disengage the cruise control. I did see a warning light appear on the dashboard but was unfamiliar with it. I later looked it up in my owners manual and it was the "electronic throttle control" etc) light. Realizing there was no way to disengage the cruise control, my only option was to try to slow the car down by pressing as hard as possible on the brake pedal while the engine was attempting to continue to accelerate. This was moderately successful and allowed me to reduce the speed to a manageable speed to lane change to the emergency lane. Once there I used both feet on the brake pedal where I was able to almost stop the car while the engine raced. I twas not able to turn the car off because it was still in gear so I threw the car into park and pushed the off button. The car shut off and I was safely stopped alongside the highway. I have since been able to drive the car but have not attempted to use the cruise control. I have scheduled it to be serviced and will hopefully get some sort of data from the car as to the malfunction. ## VIN passed ## Jeep Grand Cherokee 2013 ##.

35 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/27/2017

"takata recall" when I click the cruise control it speeds up uncontrollably and I have to hit the brakes several times to disconnect it. It does not set a control at all and continues to climb in speed.

Why is my cruise control not working in my Jeep Grand Cherokee?

A vehicle's cruise control may stop working if the vacuum actuator has stopped working or if there is damage to the vacuum hoses. The system may also fail if the cable linking the actuator to the throttle is broken.

What could cause the cruise control to stop working?

The most common reason why a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch. It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Is there a recall on 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The affected vehicles had brake booster shields installed under a previous campaign to prevent water from entering the brake booster and limiting braking ability.
