2010 mazda cx 9 oil capacity

The oil in a Mazda CX-9 needs to be changed every 7,500 miles (or every 12 months) using SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil. Always consult the owner’s manual to double-check you’re using the correct quantity and type of oil for your particular model year.

Your car’s oil must be changed regularly to avoid problems with your engine. Old oil becomes dirty or viscous (meaning it doesn’t flow as easily) and can cause fuel efficiency and performance issues with your engine.

Most oil changes follow the same steps, but you’ll need to make sure you know the specifics for your make and model of car. That’s why the

is here to break down what you need to know about a Mazda CX-9 oil change.

How often does a Mazda CX-9 need an oil change?

Generally speaking, your CX-9 needs an oil change every 7,500 miles or every 12 months, although specific timelines may vary depending on your car’s model year.

If you wait longer than around 10,000 miles to change your oil, you risk damage to your car’s engine. Make sure to keep a regular maintenance schedule and check your oil regularly.

What kind of oil does a Mazda CX-9 need?

Typically, Mazda CX-9s use SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil. This is differentfrom almost every other Mazda model (most require SAE 0W-20).

Synthetic oil helps your Mazda run more smoothly than conventional oil because it’s more heavily processed and boosted with helpful chemicals.

If you put an incorrect oil in your CX-9, you run the risk of having your car’s warranty voided. Make sure to check your owner’s manual before performing DIY oil changes.

How much does an oil change cost for a Mazda CX-9?

The main determinant of the cost of an oil change is whether you take the car to a professional or dealership or undertake the task yourself.

Professional cost

You can expect to pay between $126 and $141 to have the oil changed professionally if your car is between model years 2007 and 2021.

$44-56 of the cost usually goes toward labor, while replacement parts can cost around $82-86. If you need additional repairs, you can expect your bill to increase from there.

DIY cost

The main cost involved in changing the oil yourself is, well, the oil. 5W-30 typically costs between $4-12 for a quart or $10-40 for five quarts.

How to change the oil in a Mazda CX-9 yourself

What you’ll need

  • 5 quarts of 5W30 engine oil (4.8-qt capacity)

  • Wix 57002 oil filter

  • 8mm socket

  • 8mm Allen socket

  • Ratchet for above 2 sockets

  • Flathead screwdriver

  • Oil filter pliers

  • Funnel

  • Oil drain pan with at least 5-quart capacity

  • Clean rag or paper towel

  • Jack and jack stands or vehicle ramps

1. Warm up the engine

Turn on your engine and let it run until it reaches a normal temperature. Once the temperature is reached, turn it back off.

Check the oil level on the dipstick to make sure you aren’t having any particular issues.

2. Secure the car

Lift the front of your car using a jack and set up jack stands to keep it in place.

3. Drain the old oil

Then, you’ll need to drain the old oil. Use the flathead screwdriver to remove the plastic clips from the skid plate (directly below the oil pan). Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to unhook the metal screws.

Remove the oil drain plug with the 8mm allen socket and ratchet. As the oil begins to flow, let it drain into the drain pan.

4. Remove the filter

Once the oil is removed, take away the oil filter with oil filter pliers. Remember to let the oil drain completely first so there’s less of a mess.

5. Install the new oil filter

After thoroughly cleaning the oil drain plug and the filter mounting surfaces, take a new filter, lubricate the O ring with fresh oil, and install it.

Follow the owner’s manual for tightening or rotational specifications.

6. Put new oil in the engine

Pour in 4.8 quarts of synthetic oil using a funnel. Then, replace the oil fill cap (be sure to screw it in tightly).

Restart the engine to let the oil begin to circulate. Look and listen for any leaks or unusual sounds while the car is running. If everything seems fine, you can shut the car back down.

7. Stop the engine and check the oil level

Leave the engine off for at least several minutes. Use a dipstick to check the oil level and top it off if needed.

8. Lower the car and reset your oil change indicator

Reinstall the skid plate access panel by reversing the steps outlined above. Then, lower the jack stands or back off the ramps.

You should end by resetting your oil change tracker. Here’s how:

  • Turn the ignition or press the START button without igniting the engine

  • Find the APPLICATION button on your touch screen

  • Go to VEHICLE STATUS MONITOR and then select MAINTENANCE

  • Select OIL CHANGE, then RESET to change the oil life back to 100%

What happens if you don’t change the oil in a Mazda CX-9?

You could face serious consequences if you avoid getting your Mazda’s oil changed. Oil is an important lubricant that prevents corrosion and engine knock, regulates heat, and helps fuel efficiency

Accordingly, the problems you could face for failing to change your oil include:

  • Engine corrosion

  • Decreased fuel efficiency

  • Overheating

  • Complete engine failure

It’s better to pay a small amount for regular oil changes that are needed now. Doing so will help you avoid major repairs with large bills down the road.
