1999 jeep cherokee camshaft position sensor location

@crazymomma you did not tell us the engine size for your GC. Here is some imformation from a service manual. Should make it pretty straight forward. On the 4.0 the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) is bolted to the top of the oil pump drive shaft assembly. The sensor and drive shaft assembly is located on the right side of the engine near the oil filter.

REMOVAL - SENSOR ONLY

* Disconnect electrical connector at CMP sensor.

* Remove 2 sensor mounting bolts.

* Remove sensor from oil pump drive.

On the 4.7L engine the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP)is bolted to the front/top of the right cylinder head.

REMOVAL

  • It is easier to remove/install sensor from under vehicle.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Disconnect electrical connector at CMP sensor.
  • Remove sensor mounting bolt.
  • Carefully pry sensor from cylinder head in a rocking action with two small screwdrivers.
  • Check condition of sensor O-ring.

INSTALLATION

  • Clean out machined hole in cylinder head.
  • Apply a small amount of engine oil to sensor O-ring.
  • Install sensor into cylinder head with as light rocking action. Do not twist sensor into position as damage to O-ring may result. CAUTION: Before tightening sensor mounting bolt, be sure sensor is completely flush to cylinder head. If sensor is not flush, damage to sensor mounting tang may result.
  • Install mounting bolt and tighten to 12 Nm (106 in. lbs.) torque.
  • Connect electrical connector to sensor.
  • Lower vehicle.

My 1999 did the same thing and the sensor is in an impossible spot to fix on the bottom of motor above the transmission. I was told that if the vehicle isn't acting up don't fix it. Somewhat of a dummy light.

It's in a horrible spot and it's a common Dumby check engine readout. If the car runs good don't replace it

Noises problem
1999 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My 99 jeep grand cherokee dies if it goes below 1000 rpms and if it goes above 2000 rpm it constantly jerks. Also the oil pressure gauge is not working properly at times it will fluctuate between 20-40 but most times it stays near 0. My ex husband just recently replaced both the ignition coil and the crank shaft sensor unit in the last 3 months. A mechanic friend told me to get in the jeep and turn the ignition key on then off and then on and off and then on and watch for anything to pop up such as the check engine light flashing and count the flashes I did try this but what I got from the dash controls was where the mileage is this appeared "P 0352 P 1391 done" done this mean anything and what is the best thing to do. Also today the trans over temp light came on and the overdrive off light came on. Once I turned the vehicle off for a while and restarted it this went off.

P0352 is for the coil being faulty and the P1391 is for the cam and crank sensors being faulty but befor you change them change the spark plugs and wires cap and rotor then try it if it still has probblem then you are looking at changing the sensors and coil

Where is the camshaft position sensor on a 99 Jeep Cherokee?

On the 4.0 the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) is bolted to the top of the oil pump drive shaft assembly. The sensor and drive shaft assembly is located on the right side of the engine near the oil filter.

What are the symptoms of a faulty camshaft sensor?

A glowing check engine light, stalling, poor acceleration and bad fuel mileage are all possible signs your camshaft position sensor may be failing. Gone are the days of carburetors and distributors, replaced by a variety of sensors that help a car's computer get the maximum performance out of the engine.

Where is my cam position sensor located?

The Camshaft Position sensor is typically located in the cylinder head of the engine and has a cylindrical portion that inserts into the head. The Crankshaft Position sensor is normally located in the timing cover or on the side of the block with a cylindrical portion that inserts into the block.
